Every phase in life teaches us something important and prepares us for what lies ahead. Moving over from the school phase to college is difficult and the same with college to workplace. All the attention, caring and support which we receive from the start diminishes as and when we pass through a different phase - school, college and work. We also get to learn certain skills needed to move over and survive the next phase in life.
Being in college, you will need to learn and develop certain skills which will help you survive and succeed in the workplace. Though the skills to be possessed by an individual depend on the industry that he/she is in, there are certain skills which are common to all of them. Here they are:
1. Communication skills - A very important skill which needs to be developed by one and all, it has been taught to us from our school days. It is the first skill which an employer looks for in an individual. Any student/individual must be able to express the thoughts and also be able to understand what is being said.
2. Technical skills - Every student is expected to know how to handle a computer, since it's one of the most common means of work in the new generation. Any basic job requires a person to be able to use the computer.
3. Productive thinking - As a fresher any student is not given more responsibilities and as such the student must be ready to showcase his/her talent at the apt time by grabbing the opportunities when they come across. Making the best of the available resources, optimum utilization of time etc are a part of productive thinking, which can get the managers to notice you and move forward in the career ladder.
4. Leadership skills - Not everyone can be a good leader and as such leadership qualities are always looked for. A good leader can drive the entire team to work efficiently and also successfully complete the given task within the given time frame, which is always looked for in any organization.
5. Adaptability - Something which is never constant in nature is change. There is change everywhere around us. Willingness to accept the change and work towards making it better is a trait which can make you visible from the entire set of people around you.
6. Ability to work independently - Spoon feeding is something which we all get only when we are new to a particular task. As time progresses, we are expected to know, understand and work accordingly.
Employers too expect the same. Any employee will be told what and how the work gets done only for certain duration, after which he/she will have to complete the given tasks all by themselves.
Each one of the above given points are important for you to be successful in your workplace and career as a whole. However, if you are able to showcase at least 3-4 of them, you are definitely going to succeed. So, gear up, develop these skills and good luck for your first job.
