Job security is on most peoples' minds at the moment. The "will I, won't I" question niggling away at the back of their minds; will or won't I have a job next week? Lack of control is recognised and major factor in stress and the current uncertainty in many businesses and public bodies means that no employee can answer that question or exercise any control over it. For many people there are a number of reasons that stop them from going contracting. Most of them are rooted in fear. There is one simple way to take control of the "will I, won't I" dilemma - and that is to quit your current job. People come to contract work for a variety of reasons, some fire their employers out of sheer frustration - firing does work both ways - others find themselves 'occupationally challenged' or redundant as it is also known; while some simply take the very brave decision to give it a go. It is easy to assume that working for an employer is less risky - especially at the moment - but let's take some of those assumptions and just see if we can't turn them on their heads.
I prefer a regular pay cheque
A once a month payment of your salary is great. You have very little control over whether that will continue as the economy is not exactly burgeoning with the green shoots of recovery. Contract workers do have control over their income. If you don't have clients you don't have income, however as a contractors it is down to you to find them. Hard work and commitment pay off as contractor and you can build a strong client list - and expand or reduce this as required. In a regular job, hard work and commitment pay off in several ways - you might get to be "employee of the month" or you might get a bonus. The latter is rarer these days as organisations struggle to make ends meet, while if you are the sort of person that loves the former "accolade" you probably won't suit contract work. Contracting is about seeing real results for your hard work - usually financial - but also in terms of job satisfaction and self-esteem.
There is no freelance work at the moment
Quite the opposite; it is cheaper for an organisation to engage contractors than to have a permanent staff. In this economic climate many organisations are looking to reduce permanent staff and recruit contractors instead. It's difficult to rid yourself of an expensive payroll of permanent staff - not so with contractors. Using contract staff when the books are full, and reducing the number of them when they aren't is the ultimate in flexible staffing. From the contractor point of view, when one company lays people off, there is always another out there hiring. You'll also be able to demonstrate that you have contracting experience - valuable stuff. For contractors the recession is a bonanza.
Not for the faint hearted
Contract working is not for the faint hearted but is the most rewarding way of earning a living. You'll need to put in many hours of hard work and be thoroughly committed - but nobody but you will reap the rewards and the benefits of this way of working. Remember, contractors never seem to work in a job that they hate. Not all employees can say the same.
If you are looking to make self-employment or running a small business more straightforward, getting a contractor accountant can make all the difference. Before making the decision take advice and consider the best options for your circumstances and your business.

Thinking of Going Contract,
What's Stopping You
By John T Hughes
Many contractors or freelancers who may initially have been umbrella, or in some cases 'Sole Trader' may find that setting up a Limited Company can offer the best long term solution for a number of reasons. There are three types of these in the UK which are: Private Limited Company (Ltd); Public Limited Company (PLC) or a Community Interest Company (CIC). A CIC is a structure used for community organisations and PLCs allow you to sell shares to members of the public. Both are not relevant structures to contractors - so we will focus on a Ltd Company below.
The advantages of Limited Companies
The first significant advantage offered is that they are 'limited liability' structures. This means that the shareholders of the company are not liable for its debts should it fail. In the case of contractors and freelancers the shareholder is normally the individual contractor - though ownership can be split between different people including family members.
LTDs have an existence in law in their own right - registering them is a little like registering a birth! The company is responsible for its own debts, has its own bank account and applies for loans and finance in its own right.
Unlike sole traders, limited company profits are subject to corporation tax whereas a sole trader will pay personal tax on any profits. Payroll and PAYE systems are however required to be in place to pay employees (the contractor). In general it is advisable to have an accountancy firm to deal with this responsibility for the company.
Requirements for Limited Companies
A limited company will require at least one company director - anybody can fulfil this role as long as they are not an un-discharged bankrupt. One shareholder is required - a minimum requirement of one shareholder owning a share of £1.00 is all that is necessary and the shareholder can also be the director. The requirement for a company secretary is no longer in place for a limited company (only a PLC).
Three main documents will be required to set up a limited firm and these are as follows:
- The Certificate of Incorporation: This is the company's birth certificate and creates the company as a legal entity.
- The Memorandum of Association which includes the address of the company and defines what it will do; standard document templates are available to create this document.
- The Articles of Association which describe how the company will be run.
Who can set up a limited company?
Anybody can form one in the UK, regardless of their own nationality - remember the company becomes a legal entity in its own right. Any name can be used as long it is not already in use. They are registered in the UK at Companies House and the process is relatively straight forward and can be done by an individual. Many contractors choose to use the services of an accountant or company formation specialist to do this, however, as using an experienced professional can ensure that problems are not encountered later - important particularly in the complex area of tax responsibilities.
For the self-employed, tax can be a headache. Using an umbrella company or forming a limited company can be an efficient way to manage tax affairs, but ensuring you get the right structure for your business is essential.

They do say that "Tax doesn't have to be taxing", but for many contractors and freelancers in the UK it can be taxing enough to cause some very late evenings indeed. Working your way through tax legislation can add hours to your work schedule - hours that build up significantly over the year. Mistakes, however genuine, can be costly - costly enough to put you out of business. There are two basic models that most contractors use for running their businesses - Sole Trading, Limited Companies or working through an Umbrella Company. Whichever suits you, employing the services of a specialist contractor accountant is usually the most efficient way of dealing with tax and staying within the law.
Why specialist contractor accountants?
- Peace of mind: not traded on the stock markets but nevertheless a priceless commodity. Knowing that your tax affairs being dealt with by a professional takes the pressure off you and can save a surprising amount of time.
- Tax Returns: you'll need to ensure that your tax return is filled in accurately and is sent off on time to avoid penalties. The access to advice and support that a specialist contractor accountant can offer is again something that is hard to put a value on.
- Value for money: a benefit that is linked to both of the above. Neither peace of mind nor advice and support are easy to value - but specialist contractor accountants will provide a simple, affordable fee structure, which balanced against the time it can take to deal with accounting when it is not your 'specialised subject' offers real savings.
Finding an accountant
- Word of mouth can be a good way to source an accountant - you may have friends or relatives already using a specialist contractor accountant.
- For contractors it is important to be sure that the accountant has specialist knowledge of dealing with the freelance sector and check that they understand the implications of IR35 legislation for those working for themselves.
- Fee structures: Different firms offer different payment arrangements. Check and compare prices but always avoid a fee structure that is linked to your invoicing - this will create problems for you with regard to MSC legislation. Fixed monthly fees may be better if you intend to send all your paperwork in each month.
Professional help
Using a specialist contractor accountant can make a big difference for any contractor or freelancer. Many roles that you will need to fulfil when working for yourself do not require specialist professional training. However, accountancy is one area that should be handled by professionals to ensure that you maximise the amount of income you receive and minimise your tax liabilities - and most importantly that this is done within the law.
If you are looking to make self-employment or running a small business more straightforward, getting a specialist contractor accountant can make all the difference. Before making the decision take advice and consider the best options for your circumstances and your business.

For contractors or freelancers claiming tax back for expenses is one way you can maximise your 'take home pay' and minimise your tax bill. Done correctly, it's perfectly legal and is not 'tax avoidance'. Naturally, HMRC has strict regulations and controls on claiming expenses and any costs incurred need to be "wholly, exclusively and necessarily" through your work. Tax officials can at any time make a detailed investigation into your accounts and will be particularly interested in your expenses claims.
You can claim expenses when working through an Umbrella company and you will need to provide detailed documentation to the company to be able to do so. You should always keep receipts and records of any expenses incurred and you will need to keep these for at least five years. Below are brief details of some of items you can claim expenses from an umbrella company.
Expenses you can claim
- Mileage & Travel: You can claim for mileage to and from work using your own vehicle, travelling as a passenger in a car and for other travel costs associated with your work. Rates vary if you are travelling in your own or somebody else's car and also are paid at a lower rate after the first 10, 000 miles in a year. You will need VAT receipts for fuel to claim for travel.
- Meals and accommodation: Some umbrella companies have what's called a 'Dispensation'. This may allow you claim for meals if you have incurred a cost and have a receipt, but you may not need to send the receipt to your umbrella company. If you are staying away from home, you can claim accommodation expenses and for an evening meal.
- Equipment & Clothing: Expenses are allowable for 'tools' and for protective clothing - not normal day to day attire. Tools must be exclusively for work use as must any expense item.
- Phones: Although you can claim for business calls - on either land line or mobile phones you cannot claim line rental on your home phone or personal mobile.
- Journals and memberships: Membership of professional associations are an allowable expense in many instances - the HMRC provide a comprehensive list of those that fall into the allowable category.
Legitimate claims
Whatever expenses you do incur remember you will need to provide receipts. Allowable expenses offer a good way to reduce your tax bill - but they must be legitimate expenses. Good record keeping and claiming only for genuine costs incurred as part of your job are essential. HMRC do provide excellent guidelines and information on what you can claim for and how to ensure your claims are legitimate.
For the self-employed, tax can be a headache. Using an umbrella company or forming a limited company can be an efficient way to manage tax affairs, but ensuring you get the right structure for your business is essential.

Accounting is defined as the art of accurately recording the transactions and financial accounts of a business, keeping them in a systematic manner in order to provide accurate data and information needed for a wise decision making.
Accounting is also the art of monitoring the activities of a business, including its losses and gains. It also makes sure that all dues to the government, in the form of taxes, are followed by the business.
Accounting is then the "art of recording, classifying, and summarizing, in a significant manner, and in terms of money transactions and events which are in part at least, of a financial character and interpreting the result thereof."
Understanding the Importance of Accounting
In order to understand the importance of accounting, you have to try answering some key questions such as:
1. How much was earned last year versus this year?
2. Is the business improving?
3. How much cash is available?
4. How much money is owed by the company?
5. How much money is owed to the company?
You also have to understand the different accounting methods used in businesses.
Cash Method vs. Accrual System of Accounting
The cash method is often in contrast with the accrual system of accounting. The cash method records transactions on the date they were paid or received regardless of the date they were incurred, whereas the accrual method records the transactions on the date they were incurred, or in other words, the date of the invoice.
Single Entry vs. Double Entry
In recording accounting transactions and in bookkeeping, there are two systems that are used by businesses, the Single Entry and the Double Entry. The single entry system is also known as "imperfect accounting". It is a method of bookkeeping relying on a one sided accounting entry to maintain financial information. This is mostly used by small businesses.
The Double Entry accounting system on the other hand is the only one that satisfies all objectives of systematic accounting. It relies on the premise that answers involving questions regarding the business can only be acquired from up-to-date accounting records.
So How Important is Accounting?
It is very important to keep in track of all the business records because if it is not done so, it will be difficult to keep track of the income as well as the losses of businesses. Moreover, if there are instances of an income not accurately declared due to lack of accurate records, the government may impose an incorrect tax for the company.
By referring to the business records and financial accounts which are properly managed and kept by an accountant, wise decisions could be made especially in cases of a company becoming insolvent. These records and accounts help the business owners to plan effectively for the future and to make proper investments. In addition, accurate and proper records will help fix the price of a business should it be sold.
Conclusion
Accounting is not a science but an art as it provides one of the procedures by which accounting objectives can be achieved.
Accounting is important for every business. It does not only help the company in tracking and monitoring the transactions and cash flow to make sure it moves correctly; it also provides the business owner an insight on the potential of the company to earn better income.

Handling a business is already difficult and focusing your attention to only one element of business might make the entire business suffer.
Tax planning, financial planning, reports, and business analysis are all critical to ensure that your business is running and is on the right track. Poor management of these aspects can greatly affect your business.
If the reports are not made correctly and the account books are poorly maintained, then your business could suffer hard. Because there are a lot of things to work on in a business, it will be difficult to keep an eye on all of these aspects alone. This is why you need to find a reliable account to handle these matters.
If you would like to get the services of an accountant, one of the best places to look would be an accountancy firm. You can hire someone to do bookkeeping services, payroll management, and preparation of the financial report in full details. The finance consultant will also assist you in tax planning, which is essential for every business. A professional will be very useful to your business especially if properly trained and truly certified.
You will definitely be able to maintain the financial health of your business if you are going to hire a professional to do the other jobs for you. It will be a good investment because with an accountant by your side, you can focus more on managing the business and have fewer worries when it comes to the finances and taxes.
An accountancy firm would be the best resource if you need someone to do all the accounting stuffs for your business. The professional can also assist you in decision-making involving money matters. Whether you own a small business or a large scale business, you will surely benefit from such services.
When looking for an accounting professional, make sure that the person can be trusted. The professional must be able to present previous work so that you can determine whether that professional is really qualified or just pretending to be one.
Choosing a renowned accountant may be expensive because the rate would depend on the experience; however, it will be worth it especially if that person can truly work for you as what you have instructed him to. A professional knows the best resources for your business and knows how to optimized them to make sure your business is running smoothly.

Hire an Accountant,
My Business
By Kirk Ward
As the recession continues to slog along, slumping sales are forcing many accounting practitioners to re-think their pricing strategies. Today's small local accountants have nearly abandoned hourly rates in favor of fixed rate pricing and value pricing.
As self-employed consultants, small and local bookkeeping, accounting and tax preparation practitioners follow the latest trends taking place in industry. Trends in the industry that are often telegraphed in the more competitive local market before making their way into the higher echelons of the Big 4, the mid-tier and the regional firms.
Historically, accountants have priced their services to clients based on some form of an hourly basis. However, as clients became more sophisticated, and the accounting industry became more competitive, more and more practitioners have turned to fixed fee or value pricing models. Today Studies indicate that less than 25 percent of small local practitioners continue to price their services on an hourly basis while over 75 percent of practitioners price their services at fixed or competitive rates.
Of those who do price their services on an hourly basis, the majority of their services were focused on troubled taxpayer casework, reflecting the greater complexity of the work provided and the uniqueness of each individual case.
While demand for taxpayer representation is an in-demand service at all economic levels, the uniqueness and complexity of each individual case injects a degree of uncertainty in the work schedule. This uncertainty all but obviates the ability of the practitioner to develop a standard pricing model. And, because the troubled taxpayers situation is no longer one of staying in compliance, but rather being brought into compliance, taxpayers who desire representation are the one client category that do not argue fees and rates with local practitioners.
Meanwhile, the shift toward fixed fee pricing for standard client writeup services continues as the recession grinds on, with 56 percent of practitioners primarily offering fixed fee arrangements with clients, and an additional 19 percent offering "value pricing" (or market pricing) schemes for almost all recurring services.
Powered by a situation over the past couple of years where companies have had to take unprecedented and drastic actions, shedding large amounts of services to bring their cost structure in line with plummeting sales, and as companies regain their footing, many firms are finding that their needs aren't as inflexible as they once thought they were. For some companies this situation can be a transformational opportunity to either take professional services in-house or to explore virtual services and outsourcing, further adding to the pricing pressures facing the small and local accounting practitioner.
Meanwhile, forward-thinking practitioners are seizing competitive and strategic opportunities to transform their practices in the midst of the recession. These practitioners see specialization and niche markets as key to retaining market share and growth. As the nation exits the recession, these forward-thinking practitioners may be well-positioned to leverage the huge productivity gains that come with specialization as volume returns, outpacing their competitors by lower client churn rates, greater operational flexibility and lower operating costs.

Using an accountant's services or a contractor accountant is a great idea if you want to save your business precious money. Of course, accountants don't come for free, but sometimes a little investment can go a long way. When you balance out the cost with the savings that it can represent, it's well worth using accountants to help you with your end of year tax returns.
In fact, the application of your accountant's services can be much more far-reaching than just your tax returns. A good accountant can help you with tax consultation, VAT registration and your VAT returns, company formation, company dissolution and much more.
Wherever you're based, it's a good idea to source your accountants as locally as possible. By choosing accountants near to where you live, you will be able to arrange meetings as and when necessary without wasted time in unnecessary travelling.
The easiest way to find a good accountant is by conducting a search on the internet. The internet has become the most accessible and speedy resource for finding any kind of service that you require, so it makes sense to utilise it. Carrying out the search is easy; if you're looking for accountants then use this as your main search keyword, with the addition of your location. This will bring up a list of results for you to choose from.
Alternatively, you could also try to source your accountants through word of mouth recommendations. Talk to other businesses in your local area that use a good accountant who they can recommend.
Using professional accountants is the best way to reduce the amount of tax that you will pay - they will know all the legal loopholes and the various things that you can claim for to reduce your tax bill as much as possible while still acting within the law.
Contractor Accountants
If you're a freelancer or contract worker, there are plenty of contractor accountants around who can help you to organise your accounts and save you money - while you concentrate on doing what you do best: providing your services and using your skills to bring in more money.
The principles of finding a good contract accountants service is exactly the same as looking for any kind of accountants. Again, using a search engine such as Google, simply insert a search term based on what you're looking for and your location, then look through the results to identify the one that offers the best value for money and the services that you require.
Your accountants or contractor accountant should offer several levels of service, depending on what you're looking for. You may want to take care of your day today book keeping yourself, and then just submit these at the end of the year to your accountant in order for them to complete the necessary paperwork for HMRC. Alternatively, you might want to find an accountant who can take care of all of this for you - so you keep hold of all of your invoices and receipts and then hand them over to your accountants. They then fill in your accounts books and use the information to file your tax return.
Obviously if you live near a big city you'll find it very easy to source good accountants as you will have plenty of choice, whereas if you live in a more rural area, you may be more limited in your choices. The thing to bear in mind is that as long as your accountants are fully qualified, it doesn't really matter whether you choose a big accountants firm in the city or a smaller accountant service that is situated closer to you.

I just got off the phone with a very frustrated contractor. He has been in business for several years, but his business has grown to the point that he knows he needs to keep a closer eye on his numbers. In fact, he said "I can't sleep because I'm worried my reports are screwed up!"
I agreed to help him out by reviewing what his current QuickBooks file is doing for his business. He wants help to figure out if he's doing his "job costing" correctly so he can know how much money he's making on each job.
Job costing was part of my duties when I worked for a manufacturing company several years ago. I had to make sure the proper systems were in place to track all the employee hours and materials and supplies properly to each job. It was an ongoing process of reviewing data on a regular basis to check for flaws in the system and for inaccuracies in the numbers. I enjoyed it immensely, and learned a lot about how a breakdown in the RECORDING of information can really screw up the job profitability reports.
But, a manufacturing company isn't the only business that needs job costing.
Job Costing
What is job costing? Simply put, it is a way to track the profit and loss on specific jobs or projects for your business. Knowing how profitable or unprofitable your work is will help you make better business decisions when moving forward.
Manufacturing businesses aren't the only companies that can benefit from job costing:
-Interior Designers can track profit by customer project
-Road Construction companies can track actual profit vs estimate
-Plumbing contractors can track whether they are making or losing money on each service call
-Law firms can track profit and loss per case
-Consultants can track profit and loss per consulting job
-Online business managers can track profit and loss by project -and more.
As you can see, job costing can be very useful for many types of businesses. Figuring out the profitability of a specific project requires you to track several pieces of information.
Information that's used to determine job profitability. In order to properly "cost" your jobs, you'll need to have a way to track income and expenses for separate projects. One other note: All costs related to a specific job are also called "cost of goods sold". My choice to track job costs is QuickBooks.
Here's the information you want to track for each job:
-Labor cost- including time for employees and subcontractors; and any taxes, insurance, and benefits you pay for this labor.
-Materials cost- parts, supplies, products used on the job
-Cost of equipment to get the job done- example: did you rent any equipment? Also, figuring out a way to allocate the use of your own equipment on a job is important.
-Mileage, travel, meals-this is all an important part of getting the job done and needs to be carefully tracked
-Licenses, permits, etc-any extra licenses or permits that are required for the job need to be tracked to the job
-other-ANY expense that is directly tied to the job is considered a job expense.
The Job Cost Result
Now that you have a way to track expenses by job, you'll be able to get a summary at the end of each job or project that will look like this:
Total income for the job
MINUS
Total job expenses (from list above)
EQUALS
Job Profit or Job Loss
Job costing is extremely important for several reasons and helps you:
-keep up on the current pricing of each job cost item
-know if you've been overbilled by your vendors
-point out inefficiencies in the work process
-point to problems with subcontractors and employees
If you can't figure out how to setup a job cost system that works for your business, please contact a qualified professional (CPA, accountant, bookkeeper, Certified QuickBooks Proadvisor) to help. Job Costing
By Paul Olone
Taxes are a necessary evil in the course of life, but core to doing business or growing your personal wealth. Rather than dealing with all the good and bad advice on the internet, having an accountant handle the complicated state of my finances reduces the stress I get from doing my own taxes each year and wondering if I did anything wrong. Leave it to the pros so you can focus on the thing you do uniquely well - but, finding a great accountant isn't easy and after going through half a dozen myself, I've got some tips for finding the right one.
What's the point of having an accountant, can't I just use software and advice from the internet?
After doing my own taxes through college, I've realized that most of the off-the-shelf software out there will get you pretty good results. In fact, most average accountants won't do much better than the software you're probably using - if you're happy doing your own taxes and can take the time to research the latest tax laws, you're a better person than I. Good luck to you.
For the rest of us, we're pretty busy and we understand that leaving stuff like this to the right professionals can be the best decision you can make. Besides, you go to a doctor when you're sick and you go to the lawyers when you get sued, why not go to a good accountant when you need to worry about taxes?
Taxes and the shades of gray
Take a look at a typical tax return and you'll soon realize that there are thousands of ways to interpret the tax rules. It's pretty clear that filing taxes can be more of an art than science.
Average accountants will take a conservative approach by default. In my experience, only one accountant I know mentioned deductions from retirement accounts or luxury vehicle purchases. (Incidentally, he's been my accountant for years now.) Note: If you're getting nervous at the very thought of bending tax rules to your advantage, you probably ought to stop reading immediately - this post isn't for you. For the rest of you, what you need is a bulldog accountant that has creative ideas on how to bend tax rules to your advantage.
Sure, bending the rules might seem shady but the point is that bending the tax laws is beyond the comfort zone of most people, including me. That's why you need to find an aggressive accountant to do the work for you (and sign his name at the bottom of the return) - aggressive, while staying safely within generally accepted accounting principles, of course.
Fishing for Accountants
The key to finding great people is to ask the best people around you for their contacts - this works especially well if you know a number of successful entrepreneurs. Even if they can't give you the contact information for the person they use, they'll surely have some dirt on the accountants to stay away from.
If this doesn't work for you, the next best option is to simply start combing through the phone book and interviewing. Sure, this will suck up a lot of your time but desperate times call for desperate measures.
Loaded Questions: The Art of Interviewing Accountants
Interviewing accountants is pretty straightforward but you need to understand that they will charge you for their time. Don't start setting up in-person interviews until you've whittled the list down to the top 1-2 that you like.
Keep it simple, your goal for the interviews is to understand two primary things:
Do you get along with the accountant? You two are going to have a number of personal conversations over the next couple of years, make sure your personalities match. My rule of thumb: I won't do business with you unless I can see myself drinking with you. On a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being the most aggressive), how conservative/aggressive is this accountant? Ask specific questions about your current financial situation - use real numbers. Better yet, bring in an old tax return and ask the accountant what they would do differently. You're looking for creativity - is he asking good questions about what you might be able to deduct? When you ask about something the accountant disagrees with or warns against doing to save taxes, make sure his explanation makes sense.
Be the bullshit detector: ask questions that you already know the answer to. (This is a big one, don't forget to do this!) I usually ask about the deductibility of new vehicle purchases under my business entity. I'm not looking for him to agree with me 100%, I just want to gauge his response against my knowledge on the issue.
Get yourself the right accountant today and you won't be repeating this process for years at a time. Better yet, you'll save yourself tons of time and money in the long run - and you'll have a trusted partner to bounce ideas off of down the road. Oh, and one more thing: the really good accountants just happen to know everyone - I've been able to get leads for future clients, early access to business owners looking to sell out and references for lawyers, doctors or anyone else I might need for my own plans.

Choose a Personal Accountant
By Catherine Pain
The first reason to consider moving from spreadsheets to accounting software is an obvious one. You will probably save yourself some costs. This is because some basic bookkeeping packages will cost you less than paid spreadsheet applications. Another money saving reason to use accounting software over a spreadsheet is that you could be cutting down on costs with your accountant. Accountants often complain about the spreadsheets they receive from their clients. Unless you are an expert with a spreadsheet they can actually end up in a terrible mess. Accounting software on the other hand should provide you with a clear template for your transactions. This means that the end result is usually easier to read by accounting professionals, which means they can sign off your books more quickly. You are also likely to spend less time on the phone sorting out problems if you use a specially designed bookkeeping package.
The second reason to stop using spreadsheets is to save time. When you start with a spreadsheet you are presented with a blank canvas. Accounting software generally provides you with a laid out chart of accounts. You're told where to enter the data. Furthermore, anyone who uses a spreadsheet will know that they will often need to check that the formulas are correct. Accounting software normally calculates all the sums for you. You don't need to add in any basic formulas yourself. If you use a spreadsheet you will also need to create a new one at the end of the week, month or year. If you use an accounting package you should be able to start a new year with ease.
My third and final reason to think seriously about moving from a spreadsheet to accounting software is probably the most important one. Good accounts packages will help you to understand accounting. Therefore you will very likely gain more control over what is happening in the business. Often people who use spreadsheets will have a list of their sales and another list of expenses. These are single entries. We only have one side of the transaction. An accounting package should organise the data into double entry format.
In a nutshell we should be able to see at a glance both sides of a transaction. We should see where the money came from and where it went to. This means that you are able to assess how the sales and expenses are affecting your bank account, or your credit card account. Also when you use a spreadsheet you have no way of reconciling your data with the bank account. You should be able to do this with any standard accounting software. You need to know at all times what is happening in terms of the cash flow for your business and this is a great example of how accounting software is better than spreadsheets.
In conclusion, if you are still using a spreadsheet to do your bookkeeping maybe it's time to consider moving to accounting software. Save not only money and time, but also improve your accounting knowledge and therefore your control over the business.
For bookkeepers everywhere who are thinking of stopping using spreadsheets and moving towards accounting software that is as intuitive as a spreadsheet please click on the link.

Developing personal communication, business strategy, financial savvy, and leadership skills is essential to becoming an excellent business manager. The experience of a business management internship is invaluable, but many internship programs will not accept someone without adequate training. Traditional university programs are very thorough but can take years to complete and cost thousands, or tens of thousands of dollars. In fact, up to eighty percent of the curriculum in these programs can consist of extraneous material and the philosophy of business. In contrast, business management specialist training programs can be finished in less than six months, cost less than a thousand dollars, and focus on the most important information necessary for success in a position as a project or team manager.
Not all business management specialist courses are equal. Some have many of the same benefits of a management internship because they are taught or designed by a highly experienced business leader that has lead teams or project in several areas of a business. The resource inherent in the experiences of these people is priceless. Other BMS courses are lead by people who have attended other schools but have no relevant or real world experience. When looking for the best training classes, students can also look for a program leader that has international business experience. Due to the expanding global market, business is increasingly international in all areas.
Curriculum content is also important when selecting a course to prepare for a business management internship. Effective training schools teach methods, models, formulas, and processes that have been proven in the real business world. Leadership strategies and ways to garner the respect of team members, coworkers, bosses, and clients are also helpful. The best programs culminate in a certification exam that qualifies students for the credential Business Management Specialist. Exceptional ones continue with alumni support and resources after the course is over. This dedication to the success of the student sets great training programs apart from mediocre ones.
Interpersonal leadership skills are highly important in gaining the ability to recruit, motivate, and organize team members on a project. Increasing efficiency and profitability are directly related to how effectively team members are working. Therefore the job of managing them is a very important factor in the success of the company. Students must have a solid basis in business ethics before beginning a business management internship. A reputation for shady ethics is extremely difficult to overcome. Students should guard against behavior through a solid ethics best practices education. Business management specialist certification programs can inform and prepare students.

Preparing for a Business Management Internship
By Rafael Tassini
Business management specialists are those who have highly focused training in business leadership. The title usually comes with a certification credential with the initials BMS. This can be added to business cards or resumes for an immediate rise in respect level from others in the business world. A business management certification program can offer the training needed to pass the testing process that qualifies someone for certification. This certification can help a variety of people who either are or want to be in the management level jobs in a wide range of business ventures.
Obviously, those who are currently out of work and seeking a management position can benefit from not only the knowledge, but also the distinction this credential gives their resumes. MBA students can help set themselves apart from the massive pool of rookie applications received by companies every year by gaining this certification as well. Seasoned professionals who wish to advance in their careers or cross over to a new position can gain the skill they need from a business management certification program. Employers can pay for their employees to attend in order to increase effective team leadership and profitability of projects.
Though the reasons for getting business management training may vary, the skills learned are focused on the most important business leadership tools available. Models, formulas, and processes that have stood the test of time and modern business are intended to be understood and applied with the ability to make changes according to individual projects. Managers who are cheap imitations of the success of another person will not be able to maintain their effectiveness. As more intricate projects or new challenges come along, they will fail without sufficient knowledge of the decision-making process that lead to success in the first place.
Studying under people who have real world, business leadership experience is invaluable. Their resources and proven methods can lift an order leader to the top of the pile and transform a career. Another benefit of a business management certification program is the immersion into the language of business leadership. Networking is nearly impossible when you do not know the lingo. The best training courses teach the material, seek to impart deep understanding of methods, and help students understand the testing process. They provide memorization aids to help ensure successful passing of the exam. Exceptional programs provide continued support even after the course completion and certification is awarded.

Business Management Certification Program

When looking to jump-start your career in business, you have several options. You want your resume to stand out from everyone else's. Credentials and education help to accomplish this. Aside from landing a plum management job that you naturally excel at simply from luck, the best ways to set yourself apart from those with whom you are competing is to gain real world business knowledge. There are two kinds of education that can offer you that opportunity: a specialized MBA degree from a highly rated university or a business management certification program.
To be honest, most people who want to get into management right away already have their MBA. You probably do too, or are on your way to earning this degree. If it is assumed that most applicants have the same degree qualifications, something else must set you apart. The MBA program you attend being very well-known for the amount of practical experience or success rates of graduates is one way, but this could move you away from your home, cost an arm and a leg, and take years to accomplish. In contrast, a business management certification program is typically a six to twelve month course that leads to a certification exam. Some people complete it less than six months, and it costs a tiny fraction of the amount highly rated universities do.
The business management certification program can supplement an MBA beautifully or help those who might have a less specialized business degree but want to move into management. The beauty of the curriculum for a business management certification is in its ease of application. The whole focus is giving students skills and information that they can apply immediately to become better leaders and project managers. A range of proven models and processes that work in a variety of business settings are learned in a good training course.
In addition, through a business management certification program you can become thoroughly conversant in the business leadership lingo, facilitating the networking and interviewing processes. Certification credentials make a resume stand out and look great on a business card. The best training courses are lead by people who have legitimate experience as a successful business leader in a well-known company. They also provide support and resources after the completion of the course for your continuing success. Valuing your future is as simple as ensuring success in leadership by checking out a business management certification course.

Keep sight of your goals and reach them with a business plan
Today, the environment and climate of the business world is changing at such a rapid pace that it is necessary to more forward swiftly in order to stay ahead. This is why it is necessary in business management to set out a plan that demonstrates the direction your company is headed in for a set time period. This could be 90 days, 6 months or however you choose to lay it out. However, in business management it's often better to prepare a plan that spans a shorter period of time, in order to keep workers and departments headed in one common direction and avoid confusion. This makes things easier on managers as well.
Good business supervision means setting out a plan that clearly identifies how fast you want your company to grow in a given time period, your desired rate of profitability for the company, and where you want to be in the industry marketplace as far as position. Setting out a plan that covers all areas such as improving upon profits, increasing market share, forming strategic alliances with others and improving the skills of your workers is necessary in effective business management.
By creating a short-term business plan, management staff can easily keep objectives in mind and know in what direction all areas of business are going at any given time so that changes can be made if necessary.
Directing employees in business management
Your employees are the foundation of your business; they perform most of the tasks necessary to keep your operation running smoothly. In smart business management, you want workers who are motivated, dedicated and goal-oriented. The best way to accomplish this is through effective leadership.
Great leaders are an essential part of exceptional business expertise. Through planning, action, organization, directing, motivating and monitoring, a leader is capable of getting workers "fired up" to do their very best, and to be as excited about reaching the goal or completing the task at hand as those in management are. In order to get the best performance from employees, it is necessary that they feel part of the team.
These are two areas of business management that are absolutely essential to the success and growth of your company. While you may be the general manager or CEO of the company, it takes all of the smaller parts to make up the whole of success. Thorough and effective business management will ensure that your company or organization thrives now and for years to come.

Businesses can't go without proper management. Hence aspiring entrepreneurs cannot start up any enterprise if they are not well acquainted to the art and science of business management. Given the age of the practice, plenty of business management styles have been established. Entrepreneurs who wish to succeed in their business ventures should be knowledgeable of these and be able to practice them correctly.
Here are the three types of business management styles:
1. Autocratic
This type of management hands over all of the power to the proprietor. All the decisions are made unilaterally. This management style is actually adapted when no trust is established to the workers. Essentially, everything that goes on in the business will reflect the preferences of the owner.
On one hand, this can be effective when quick decisions have to be made. It can project a cohesive and confident management. But if the reasoning of the person in power is corrupted, any decision made autocratically may put the business in demise. This also makes the business prone abuses and the workers more dependent.
There are two kinds of autocratic managers. The directive autocrat usually makes unilateral decisions and closely supervises the workers during the execution. The permissive autocrat, meanwhile, gives some space for workers to carry out the task.
2. Paternalistic
Decisions for this type of management are still unilaterally made. However, it pays more attention to social needs and worker views. Entrepreneurs who apply this are constantly consulting their workers regarding agreeability of certain business decisions and they ensure that needs are met. There is still a sense of authority fostered but moral is better cared for.
This management style builds up loyalty but like autocratic management, it still supports dependence.
3. Democratic
This style of management puts complete confidence in employees and allows them to make decisions. Authority is delegated and workers are empowered to make conclusions and plans, with the consent of the proprietor. Given the set up, this management style usually involves meetings and the formation of discussion groups.
Though this does promote independence on the side of the workers, the decision making process is severely lagged as contradictions are bound to occur. Regardless, if important matters are deliberated, disagreements may be healthy as it saves the business from biases.
4. Laissez-faire
This type of management basically involves full turnover of power. The leader stands side-by-side with his staff as they take over the responsibilities of the leader. It's every department for their selves.
Communication does run both ways and it does help bring out the best from everyone. But given that there is no unifying element to the decisions made; laissez faire's management style is actually pretty poor.
See, not all business types require the use of the same management style. And particular circumstances only welcome specific management practices. Familiarity with all management styles then makes a manager, leader and entrepreneur more flexible with changing business dynamics. In view of the nature of the task at hand, or the nature of the work force or his own personality and skills, he can appropriately extend the management style that is called for and that which he can ably exercise.

Small Business Management Consulting Can Solve Problems
What is small business management consulting? Technically, there is more than one answer to this question. There are many things that a company can achieve by using a small business management consultant. If a company has numerous issues that need to be addressed, a consultant may be needed long-term. If there are minor problems that need to be focused on, the consultant may only be needed for a short time.
It may be a wise choice for a new business owner to have help by having a consultant help with small business management consulting. There are many behind the scene actions that take place before a company opens up. There needs to be proper accounting, inventory, and merchandising, to name a few. There are a lot of things that need to be covered and a consultant can ensure everything is in place prior to the business opening.
Small business management consulting could also consist of leadership assistance. It is very important that a company has employees who are reliable and trustworthy. In order for a company to be productive, the employees have to perform their duties correctly and efficiently. A consultant can help by providing leadership training. This will ensure that each employee know what their job is and how to do it correctly. They can also help the employees with time management. This will keep production running smoothly, with few complications.
Problems that arise in a company that are left unattended can get worse, practically overnight. When an issue occurs, it should be handled as quickly as possible. It is easier to fix a problem when it first occurs rather than waiting until it gets out of control. One area of the company may be affected at first, but if the problems are ignored, they can begin to have a negative impact on different areas. This only creates more issues for the business owner to handle. Small business management consulting can address current problems and try to prevent future problems.
Oftentimes problems are ignored or put on the back burner simply because the person in command doesn't have enough time to handle everything. When a person is responsible for many aspects of a business, it is hard to be in numerous places at once. A small business management consulting firm can send a consultant to come aboard and help get things under control. The consultant can work side by side with the owner or management, or they can work alone in fixing the problems.
If the consultant works on the problems at hand alone, this gives the owner the time to focus their attention on other areas of the company. Consultants are problem solvers, it is what they do best. They can look at an issue from all sides, come up with a plan on how to fix the issue and then put that plan into action. For example, if one of the company's issues is with loss of revenue, the consultant will look at all areas where money is coming in and going out. If a vendor is charging too much for supplying the company with its product, the consultant can look for another vendor. They will look for one that can provide top quality products for a reasonable price. Another thing the consultant may look at is the time it takes the vendor to get the item to the company. If a customer is wanting a specific item that the company doesn't currently have, and the company tells them they can order it, it doesn't need to take weeks for that to happen.
It is a known fact that problems can occur at anytime and sometimes the problem is too big for one person to take care of. With small business management consulting, the owner of the business doesn't have to be alone. They can get the help they need in a timely manner so the business is affected as little as possible. Sometimes with a problem, there is an easy fix and some problems take a little longer to find a solution. A consultant can work with the owner or management until the problem is resolved and come up with a plan of action to prevent that same problem from occurring again in the future. Sometimes the best method of problem solving is as simple as prevention.
If you are looking forward to starting your own business, you may want to consider contacting a small business management consulting firm. They can partner you up with a consultant that can help you from the very beginning. If your business is already open, but you are having some issues, a consultant can help you come in, locate the problem and come up with a proper course of action and implement it. Small Business Management Consulting,
Wise Investment in Any Company
By Roger Bryan
Business management consulting is very beneficial to any company. A consultant can assist with many areas of the business, making it more productive. The owner or manager of a business has many different things to take care of within the company, and sometimes this means some things are neglected.
If a company is having difficulty with profit and loss, business management consulting can implement cash-flow planning. There are different definitions of cash-flow, but there are three main types that business management consulting can help with. The first one is operational cash-flow. If a company wishes to stay in business, this cash-flow has to remain positive. This area can consist of money that is gained or lost due to the company's activities. The second one is investment cash-flow. This is normally the cash received from life-long assets or money that is spent on things such as acquisitions or investments. The last one is financing cash-flows. This includes money that is brought in from debts or equity, but also includes money that is spent, such as share repurchases and debt repayments.
Getting assistance with advertising is another one of the many business management consulting services that are available. Advertising a company is very important. Some business owners may not know how to effectively advertise for their company. There are so many outlets when it comes to advertising, and a business management consultant will know exactly where to start. There are many forms of advertising such as, television commercial, radio broadcasts, fliers, and even the internet.
Another good thing about consulting is that they can provide help with internal issues. Employees may have a hard time understanding what their job really is. This may be caused by the owner or manager not having enough time to really explain the duties to the employee. A consultant can come in and do things such as employee training. An owner may not have the time to organize this type of training, but business management consulting can help get all of the workers on track. The company relies on its employees to keep production up. If workers are confused about their duties, then the production of the company slows or stops completely. If the production fails, so does the company.
When it comes to making a company successful but an owner is not quite sure of how to make that happen, business management consulting can help by offering the company new ideas. The consultant can possibly put a new spin on an old idea. A business owner looks at their business differently that a business consultant would. Ideas can be generated on many different topics such as, making a product greater or developing an elaborate marketing plan. Business management consulting covers many different things allowing the company to find exactly what they need in one place, which can actually save on costs.
Every business in the world today has one goal, and that is to be the most successful. That is the ultimate goal for any type of business. You will never hear a person who is starting a business say that their goal is to fail. To be a profitable company, it takes patience, knowledge and perseverance. It is nice to know that there are people out there who specialize in business and can take a company from possibly closing to getting ahead and staying ahead. Competition grows daily, so being in the lead is very important.
