Role of the job

It can be a tough and stressful job. In essence, they are solely responsible for coordinating and assembling all the behind the scenes details pertaining to an event. Whether that be a wedding, corporate event, or exhibition. The events planner has to liaise with the client putting on the event to make sure that each and every one of their requirements are met, no matter how small the detail. A good event organizer will be able to make sure that they can look at the event from all angles and leave no stone unturned, when it comes to detail. It's quite often the small details which can make or break an event.

Delegation skills

As often the case, events take a lot of planning and action, and this is something that one person simply cannot do on their own, so the need to be able to delegate tasks out to others is key.

How do I get into it?

The formal way

You can take a degree in event organisation and management and many universities offer this as an option. This is a 2-3 year course and although you may pass, it by no means guarantees you a job. Having said this, big event companies who are looking for recruits prefer to take on graduates.

The informal way

The good thing about this occupation is that you don't need any formal qualifications in order to succeed. Most, but not all event organizers work freelance. Although working for yourself is great, building up your own clients could be an issue until you get established. One idea is to try to organise an event for someone you know, either your boss at work or friends and family. If it goes well and to plan, then use that as a basis for a testimonial that you can show future clients.

Pay

The pay scales for an event organizer do vary considerably. If you are a junior in a company, you could be earning around £15,000 per annum. More experienced one can earn around £30,000-£35,000 per year. High flyers who deal with the high end events, can earn in excess of £90,000.

7 Strategies for Managing Your Priorities by Learning to Say No

As a busy executive, you have a lot of demands on your time. There are meetings, projects, lunches with the boss, and charity dinners. You can't possibly do everything you are asked to do and still get positive results for your company. You need to determine which things are important and which aren't-and you need to learn to say no to the things that aren't.

Attending an executive time management training course is a good way to develop the skills you need to prioritize your tasks and goals. But if you don't have time for a time management course, these seven strategies for saying no will help get you started.

1. Don't say maybe.

If you want to say no, say no. Maybe will give the person asking false hope, and you will end up having to say no sooner or later so why not do it now? Think about what happens when you tell your kids maybe. They keep pestering you until they get an answer. Employees and co-workers can be the same way. Don't put off the inevitable. Say no right away and get it over with.

2. Recommend someone else.

If you're not the best person for the job, say so. Give them the name of a person who may be able to help them. In addition to keeping your schedule free for more important things, the task will be done in a more efficient and effective manner when it is done by someone whose skills are a better match for the job.

3. Prepare ahead of time.

There are probably things you get asked to do repeatedly that you would rather not do. What are they? Have a response ready so that next time you are asked to help plan the company picnic, you know what to say.

4. Suggest something else.

Instead of an hour-long Power Point presentation that will take several hours to prepare, can you accomplish the same result with a shorter, more informal approach? If you are trying to impress a client, by all means put together a top-notch presentation, but for an internal team meeting it may not be necessary.

5. Tell them you can do it later.

Perhaps your schedule is full right now, but you could fit it in next week, next month, or next year. They may or may not be willing to wait, but by giving them the alternative, you put the ball back in their court. Now they can decide whether to find someone else for this project or let you fit it into your schedule when you actually have time.

6. Give them a reason.

Tell them why you can't do it in a concise and matter-of-fact way. For example, you could say, "I'm sorry, but I just don't have time for that," or, "I don't know how to do that. Can you find someone else?"

7. Don't give a reason.

Don't feel like you always need to have an excuse. Most of the time, it's perfectly acceptable to "just say no."

10 Important Points for the PMP Exam

To pass the PMP exam, you need to have some key points ingrained in your mind forever. These points are used again and again in the PMP Exam Questions. Nothing difficult... Just simple principles, and once you understand them, you will be better prepared for the revised PMP exam.

Here are 10 Very Important Points to remember for your PMP Exam:

1. The project manager is empowered and has ultimate authority and accountability for a project. Therefore, the Project Manager must always be proactive, and look for areas of improvement, and communicate all the time, with all the key stakeholders. Be prepared to make decisions quickly, proactively, and solve problems quickly, directly, and effectively. People look upon you for direction and leadership.

2. Projects should be strategically aligned with the high-level strategic objectives of the organization. This improves the chances of the project success. Do not include any changes to the project, which do not align to the corporate vision, as they will take up valuable time and resources. Get clarity from the Change Control Board (CCB) if required. The Sponsor or Client should be part of the CCB.

3. The Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) forms the basis of all estimating and project planning. This is part of Scope Management. Many people confuse the WBS to be part of the Time Management Knowledge Area. Beware! The WBS is an extremely useful tool in clarifying the scope of the project. Because it is like a org chart ( and looks like a picture), it is easy to find any missing areas, are identify blind spots in the requirements.

4. Project Managers spend almost 90% of their time in communicating. It will not do you or the project any good if you simply hide in your cubicle and communicate using email alone. It is important to go out, and meet the team members, stakeholders, and understand what is going on in their world. Communication has to be a 2 way thing. Not only Written, and not just one way.

5. Planning is the most important of all the Project Management processes. Projects don't fail at the end, they fail at the beginning - if they are not planned properly and accurately. Of the 42 processes in the PMBOK Guide, 20 belong to the Planning Process Group. And 48 questions out of the 200 come from Planning processes alone. So study this carefully. There is a proper sequence of doing the planning work, and it is not listed in the PMBOK Guide. Let me know if you need help in this area...

6. The Project Team must be involved early in the Planning process and in all major decisions concerning the project. The earlier you can onboard your project management team, the better it is. Do not attempt to do everything on your own. Get your project management team, who can assist you in the tasks. Remember that Project Management is an art, and you do not have to be a domain expert to manage projects successfully. You should be good at managing people, communicating, negotiating, motivating, and have leadership qualities, which are more important than technical expertise.

7. Lessons Learned and Historical Records are essential inputs to just about every Project management process, especially Planning. For the sake of the PMP Exam, assume that you always have access to the Project management office (PMO), who will be able to provide you with the required templates, checklists, procedures and policies. They also have a complete archive of past projects' project files, templates, checklists, risk registers, milestone list, assumptions, constraints etc. You can easily get access to this handy resource for this project, just by asking the PMO.

8. Project Stakeholders and their needs & expectations are very important and should be well managed and balanced from the early on. Remember, the cost of making a change increases as time passes. So the early we can get the stakeholders involved, and see their inputs, complete requirements, the better it is for the project (and lower cost too). Stakeholder influence is highest in the beginning of the project, and comes down as the project reaches completion.

9. Quality Control is an internal affair. It takes the completed deliverables coming from the Executing Processes, and converts them into validated Deliverables. These deliverables are then tested by the customer in the Verify Scope Process, and converted into Accepted Deliverables. Both of these processes happen in the Monitoring and Controlling Process Group. Many questions arise from the close relationship between these 2 processes.

10. Adding out-of-scope extras (also called "gold plating") to please project stakeholders adds no value and is strongly discouraged. You must always be on the lookout for "scope creep" and "gold plating", as they can take up valuable time and cost on the project. Remember also that adding scope increases risk and impacts time and cost too. So beware of adding any extras. Only deliver what is expected of you.

Understanding and memorizing these key points, and applying them to PMP exam questions will assist you in getting correct answers.

Knowing When It Is Time to Hold, Fold or Walk Away From Your Job

You will know when it is time to quit your job and move on to a much better job, career or opportunity when your company starts giving you double jobs, skipping you when new opportunities crop up, or even when they hire someone just above your job category. Also, when everybody of importance around has gone, or are being threaten with lay off or downsizing. The signs will be all over the place. You will hear it from your co-workers. Your bosses will speak in a very rare and unfamiliar voice and tune. Your business and consumer dealings will feel it first. The weather might even be affected by what is happening to you.

You will have to make a decision on how long you will be willing to put up with the nonsense, misery and the general discontent. That is no easier matter.

Walking away might be hard to do, but if you do not make a choice a choice will be made for you, and you may not like what is coming. If you wait too long, you just might be the last man standing.

Preparation is the best defense. Going to a meditative level and stepping back.Take a real hard look at what you want, want you do, and hope to achieve in the very near future.

Read journals, books and articles of all kinds that pertain to your chosen field of interest. Join clubs, associations and societies that have your best interest in mind. Write articles and books about what you do.

Attend events of all kinds that pertain to what you want or hope to be doing in the near future.

Do not forget starting your own business. That is the American way. Seek out advice from people who know better. You may have to pay for some of that goodly advice and it would be worth it. You may need another pair of eyes on the problem at hand. Above all be brave and have faith.

Make sure that your energy levels are up and running. Make sure you are taking the necessary vitamins and nutrients for the body and mind. Try new things whenever possible that will be an asset to you and your family.

Regroup with the family. Have regular meetings to decide on what to do next. Can you eat an elephant? Of course you can, piece by piece. So, whenever you have this huge or uncontrollable problem take a step by and look at it closely and take it apart, piece by piece. You will feel much better in the short and long run of things. Besides, it is loads of fun. Challenge yourself to do better. Do not sit on your royalty posterior and hope for a recovery. You must make the recovery. Once you connect with the world and the Intelligence all will be well. The world must know what you want and hope to accomplish. It helps when you know where you are going.

Missing out on office parties? Not getting asked out on special occasions at work and play? Finding it difficult to make new friends? Fewer and fewer people greeting you with hellos in the morning.

Sometimes you might think there must be a full moon when things do not go your way. And, sometimes you are right to blame it on the moon. It is not fair to blame the ever changing moon, but what else have you been taught over the years? Blaming the moon, the weather and someone else seems to be the most protective way to get it off your shoulders.

Times are changing and we must change with the times, right? Well,I t depends on whom you may ask that question, and what you want to change.

If you are one of those independent ones, you will disagree, and if you are of the other opinion, you might say right on, or that is "cool."

The best, the very best way to change all this unhappiness is to become famous.

Just become famous and all of your troubles will disappear, right? In fact, with the fame and hopefully fortune come with their own problems and dilemma. But become famous by writing a book, giving an important speech or address, or give of yourself freely.

Famous and popularity go hand in hand, so have fun in whatever you do.

Writing a book is not as difficult as it may seem. There are story ideas all around you.

If you still seem to have a problem of developing a story, just go to sleep with thoughts on your mind. For example while in bed, head on pillow, ask yourself a series of questions that you are highly interested in knowing the answers. Try these questions. Who am I? How do I become famous and popular? Being open minded and pragmatic also helps too.

While at work try to introduce unique organizational skills. Take on tasks that no one else wants to do. But before hand make sure you can do the job, so practice before volunteering your services. If you have a kitchen, start cleaning it up. Do it before you are asked to do it. Make sure that your boss sees you doing the little jobs. Do not be the very first person to run out the door when the final work bell goes off. Be early to work. Willing help others do their job. Master others job duties, and do not ask for any compensation unless it becomes awfully obvious. We do not want others to take advantage, do we? Not one of these action plans should be shared with anyone else. You are always in competition with co workers, do not listen to anyone that says it differently. Do not be caught with your shoes untied.

Read more than anyone else in your field of interest. Make it your mission to move several steps ahead of your nearest competition. In other words, know your business and others as well. Run the show. The more control you can muster the better. Be indispensable.

Write articles about your job, your career and your company. Whatever happens, enjoy yourself and be at peace with the world.

When you are fortunate to get a job do the work with all your heart. That is the good talk, but what is left out is the glue that holds you together when you are in a very distasteful position. Especially when you are working several different levels before where you are accustomed to be working. Or when you are earning many times lower than what you have grown accustomed to living on these days.

What is failed to be mentioned is that there are laws in the universe in regards to work, play and just living a good life and reaping all the rewards. When you are in a dissatisfying job, you are supposed to give it all your might and attention. You remember the old saying of be a janitor or wash dishes, but you become the very best janitor or dishwasher there is.

There is much meaning to that statement. But most people lose track of its true meaning. After getting the new post, one should take a step back and canvas the position and just before doing any work there should be a set of affirmations, prayers or important statements that should be memorized and said while doing the duties in the position. For example if you are cleaning toilets, considering saying Every Day in Every Way I am Getting Better and Better. This was coined by the Frenchman Emile Coue. Another statement might be I am healthier, happier and busier than ever. I am proud of my self, I am proud of my new job. All is well.

Do these statements and similar ones on a daily basis, but make sure they are said while doing your job. You may even add some rhythm to your statements. You do not have to sing or write songs about the affirmations, but do what feels best for you.

The new job plus the action steps of statements is in total sync with the universe. You cannot give out without being rewarded. The balance must be in balance. What goes out into the universe must be returned. It will not necessarily be returned in its natural or original state, but it must be returned.

Besides, it feels great working, doesn't it? It is very hard to hit or stop an object that is moving. One never knows why the Intelligence has placed them in their present position. This position may be short termed. You are just passing through, so make this time a worthwhile one. Cherish the moment, and keep your eyes, ears and other parts open for the changes. You never predict the right people you may meet or the activities you may face and even the ideas you just might pick up by accident.

Second, make a checklist of the fields where you excel. How Much Is Minimum Wage?

By definition, minimum wage is the lowest amount of money that an employer is required to pay out to employees per one working hour. However, workers who are under eighteen years of age (twenty-one years in the United States), as well as workers who earn tax-free tips such as waiters, bar tenders and bell boys are not paid the minimum wage. In different countries it may vary, depending on the state of the economy and the living standard in each particular country. There is no global standard mandating a threshold beyond which states cannot go. This article reviews the wage rates in the United States, the United Kingdom and some of the strongest economies in the European Union.

As of July 2009, the US Congress fixed the federal minimum wage rate at $7.25 per working hour but in some states like California, it could be as high as $8 per hour. The states with the highest wage are Washington, Connecticut, and Oregon. The salary is lowest in Wyoming and Georgia. Santa Fe, the capital of New Mexico, has the highest minimum wage, set at $9.85. As per the US territories, the rate varies according to industry sectors in American Samoa and Puerto Rico. In addition, the workers who earn tips are paid a subminimum wage, which is currently at $2.13 per working hour.

The situation in the United Kingdom is a bit different, as the minimum salary there depends largely on the employee's age: companies are required to pay GBP 5.80 per hour to workers aged 22 and older, while those between 18 and 21 years of age receive a so-called "development rate" which is GBP 4.83 per hour. The minimum wage for workers under 18, who are no longer of compulsory school age is GBP 3.57.

The minimum wage rate in the member states of the European Union is calculated on a monthly or hourly basis. It is set either by the government or by a national agreement between representatives of the different economic sectors in each particular country. There is a small group of EU member states where the wage differs in the various sectors of the economy. In addition, the minimum wages in the European Union may vary drastically from just 123 Euros per month in the poorest EU member state, Bulgaria, to 1642 Euros gross minimum wage in Luxemburg as of January 2009. Ireland has the second highest wage in the European Union, set at 1,462 Euros per month, followed by Belgium (EUR 1,387 per month), the Netherlands (EUR 1382/month), and France (EUR 1,321 per month). For comparison, the minimum wage rate in the Czech Republic is just EUR 306 per month and in Slovakia - 296 Euros per month. The minimum ware rate is 232 Euros per month in Lithuania and 153 euro per month in Romania. Also, there are EU member states like Germany and Italy, where salaries are established by means of collective bargaining.

Job Description

Inspectors do not give precise estimates on repairs, however, nor do they inspect things like well water or septic systems. This job requires attention to detail and compliance with safety regulations, such as wearing hard hats or masks when entering a construction area.

Skills Required

#1: The smartest person always gets the job

Definitely not true - companies these days are more interested in the complete worker. Having brains is always an advantage, but it's not the only thing that hiring managers are looking for. In today's economy, an employer wants to know that, if required, you are able to complete a wide range of jobs. Having transferable skills, a can do attitude and a willingness to learn and be involved in all aspects of the business is key to nailing the job interview.

#2: Direct experience is most important

Transferable skills are key. In certain industries the job specification may require direct experience, but in many circumstances being able to show that you have the skills to succeed is just as important. Do not get discouraged if you feel that you lack the right skills to get a new job. Concentrate on the value added skills that you have and highlight these skills on your resume and in the job interview.

#3: Dating a co-worker will lead to career doom

An urban myth. I have even heard of stories where dating the boss has resulted in career success (not recommended!). Criminal Justice Report Writing: Interviewing Victims

Experienced police officers say that interviewing victims can be one of the most stressful parts of the job. Victims bring a host of negative and sometimes overwhelming feelings to the interview: fear, rage, helplessness, confusion, and guilt. The officer, on the other hand, has a job to do--gathering information--and a limited time frame to work with. Follow the guidelines below to conduct a victim interview efficiently and effectively.

1. Acknowledge the victim's feelings first. It's understandable that an officer might want to get to the facts right away, bypassing the victim's feelings. But this approach is likely to backfire: Feelings ignored don't disappear--instead they're likely to return with the volume turned up.

A businesslike tone that inspires confidence ("You're safe now, Ma'am" or "I understand that you've been through a horrible experience") builds trust and sets the stage for an effective interview.

2. Don't blame the victim. Your job is to prosecute lawbreakers, not victims. Citizens sometimes complain that law enforcement makes them feel guilty about what happened to them: A rape victim has a nice figure and attractive clothes; a burglarized house had open windows; a car involved in an accident was exceeding the speed limit. Get the facts, but focus your attention on the offender's wrongdoing.

3. Avoid excessive questioning. Cooperate with other personnel at the scene to ensure that victims aren't asked to go over the same information repeatedly. Stifle your curiosity and stick only to relevant information.

4. Be fair and professional. It's human nature to like some people better than others, to think in stereotypes, and to treat one person better (or worse) than another. And it's human nature to let your biases affect your interactions with other people.

But professionals are expected to hold themselves to a higher standard of behavior. Avoid showing your disapproval of a victim's lifestyle, values, or beliefs. Here are some situations that might challenge your professionalism:

-an African-American officer investigates a crime against a white citizen who displays Confederate flag in his home and on his car

-a middle-income officer interviews a single mother who's living in a small, sparsely furnished, and untidy home

-an officer who belongs to a religion that opposes homosexuality interviews a lesbian who was assaulted by her partner

-a Jewish officer investigates a crime against a man who is outspokenly anti-Semitic

5. Examine your own attitudes towards laws and lawbreakers. Past experience can color your views of what does or does not constitute a crime, and those attitudes can cause an officer to adopt a dismissive attitude toward a victim's concerns. Remember that you're enforcing society's laws, not your own values.

For example, an officer who grew up in a family of avid hunters may wonder why she's asked to enforce wildlife protection laws. Someone whose parents had a violent relationship may not see the point of prosecuting a man who assaulted his wife.

It's vital to be aware of how your past has shaped you and to make appropriate adjustments in your attitude when necessary. Law enforcement--as the name applies--is about laws, not your biases and opinions.

6. Educate yourself about community resources for victims, and offer information when appropriate. Experts say that victims can experience long-term damage to both their health and their relationships. Most communities offer services to help victims deal with injuries, emotions, and adjustment to everyday living. Make sure you have the information you need (booklets, fliers, phone numbers). Document any information you share with victims.

These guidelines, based on officers with long experience in talking to victims, can go a long way to enhancing your professionalism and the reputation your agency enjoys in your community. Review them often, and practice them whenever possible: The benefits are both significant and long lasting.

Here are some simple steps that people can take that will help recession-proof their skills: There's no doubt about it, the economy is in a mess, and no-one knows how long it's going to last for. The stock market continues to fall, and the economy remains in the doldrums, despite Congress's bailout plan.

The majority of people watch the news of thousands of lay-offs with resignation. "I guess I will just have to continue to work hard, and hope for the best" seems the attitude of many, which is incredibly worrying.

Far from the time to continue to do what you've always done, it is at crisis points like this that we must all focus on recession-proofing our careers. Many are worried about their jobs, but most don't do anything about it.

Instead of sticking their heads in the sand, people need to make sure they're brushing up on their skills so that, even with so many cutbacks happening across just about every industry, their companies will see them as the valuable assets that they are.

Here are some simple steps that people can take that will help recession-proof their skills.

Step one: The old adage is true - if you do what you've always done, you'll get what you always have. So don't just carry on regardless, but look at how you can enhance your skills. You could, for example, look at the computer programs you use at work and improve your skills with them. Look at all the technology available to you to maximize your productivity and make the most of it - work smarter, not harder! It'll help you find more hours to be truly productive and valuable.

A lot of people learn 'just enough' to do their jobs. Make an honest inventory of your existing skills and make an effort to improve on some of them. For example, most of us over the age of 30 or so learned to use spreadsheets on the job. What percentage of the features on your spreadsheet program do you know how to use properly, and what percentage do you 'kinda' know? Most programs come complete with tutorials - so why not make the most of free training?

Step two: You've increased the depth of your existing skills, now it's time to broaden them. Try taking on new responsibilities at work, and volunteer for new tasks. Offer to take on new projects, especially the stuff that no one else wants to do - and do it before someone else does. You'll learn new skills, and your boss will really appreciate it. The more you're willing to go out on a limb, the more valuable you become to your boss and your company. It'll look great on your resume, too!

Step Three: Take the lead. Once you've shown willingness to take on new projects, the natural progression is to continue to develop leadership skills. Some people think that leadership is just for supervisors and managers. This is nonsense. Everyone can use leadership skills to add value to their company. Businesses need leaders at all levels of the organization. Take up every opportunity you can to lead a group, team or committee and, if the opportunity doesn't come up at work, volunteer in your local community and use that to put something back while developing your skills. Every time you take the lead, you gain more experience in influencing others; which is a universally valued skill.

And finally...

Revisit your resume. I'm not implying you'll be looking for work in the immediate future, quite the opposite. Used correctly, your resume is an inventory of a valued company asset. Cast a critical eye over your resume - find the gaps and get them filled in! For example, if you think your resume is a little light on the leadership experience, offer to head up the company's next holiday party or charity event. If there are no opportunities at work, why not volunteer to co-ordinate a blood drive, co-ordinate a food collection for your local homeless shelter, or volunteer for the school board.

What does your work experience and resume tell others? Make sure that it's well-rounded and up-to-date, and let your skills will bring you through these rocky times.

The main point to take away from this is that, when times are changing, you have to change with them. People are naturally resistant to change so, if you can take the lead, enhance the depth and breadth of your skills, sharpen up your resume and be at the forefront of the changes, then you're one step ahead of the majority.

Before you can lead others, you've got to take the lead with yourself.

First Impressions - Lasting Impressions

We've all been told when meeting someone for the first time, whether it be a prospective client, a new employer or a stakeholder, to be energetic and give a firm handshake (not so hard the other person winces or drops to the ground). However, honestly, when someone is meeting you for the first time, what other qualities do you consider as part of "sizing up" the person opposite you? Perhaps you're not aware of it, but there are several traits that form anyone's opinion. Therefore, when you're the one on the "hot seat," remember:

· Eye Contact - Look directly at the person to whom you're speaking. However, you should drop your eyes occasionally, or else it comes off as "creepy." At the same time, don't talk while looking up, down, to the side, etc. Your confidence and honesty are being analyzed as a result of your eye contact. It's not something the prospective client, employer or stakeholder realizes as part of a check off list. It's often sub-conscious, but an opinion about you is being formed.

· Packaging - Is your outfit appropriate for the occasion? If you're pitching another person, the "casual Friday" that has morphed into informal clothing at all times could kill your chances right away? You could be eliminated for making bad choices, but you will never seem over-dressed if a suit is worn by men, and a dress, skirt or pants suit is worn by women. How many times have you seen Hawaiian shirts and flip flops in the business environment?

· Creating A Relationship - A majority of people are so involved with talking about themselves they forget the meeting, for whatever the reason, should be about the person with whom you're meeting. Look around the room to get an idea about family, interests, awards, etc. If there's a signed baseball, ask about it. If there are family pictures, ask about family. When you receive an answer, you can "catch the ball" by talking about your own. That's how you start a conversation and, thereby, a relationship. If the meeting is with a potential client, you should realize that people like to do business with people they know, trust and like.

Can first impressions be turned around? Just possibly. However, if any of the above points is not emphasized on the first visit, you probably don't have the awareness to change the picture. Therefore, make sure that first impression creates a business (and perhaps personal) friendship, whether a deal is closed or not. You never know how it will help you in the long run.

Judgment Business Names And Entities

I am not a lawyer, I am a judgment referral expert (Judgment Broker). This article is my opinion, based on my experience in California, and laws vary in each state. Nothing in any of my articles should ever be considered legal advice. If you ever need legal advice or a strategy to use, you should contact a lawyer.

When you start a judgment business, or any business, you will be choosing and verifying a good business name. If your name is (e.g.) Frank Smith, you could register a franksmith domain, and do business under your own name. You could then skip getting a fictitious business name (doing business as) registration. However, most people form a business under another name, such as JudmgentsRus, and file a fictitious business name application.

Unless you are an attorney, you cannot represent anyone else. If you are a sole proprietor using a DBA, when in court, or when signing court documents for judgments you own, you must sign them with your real name. A DBA is not a separate entity from you.

The only advantage to signing court documents with your name and also your DBA business name, is if you have a catchy DBA name and you think someone might notice it. This happens less often than one might think. So signing court documents just with your name, saves you time and hassle.

Note that in most states (South Carolina being one exception) LLCs and corporations cannot represent themselves in court. For most judgment recovery businesses, it is usually best not to form a corporate entity.

If you are going to hire a lawyer to represent you or your company in all court matters, or you are part of a collection agency, forming or using a corporate entity might make a lot of sense.

Forming a corporate entity can be expensive. In California, you must pay the state $800 per year (even if you lose money), and hire an accountant to file your corporate taxes, etc. It is best to check your local state and county laws, and talk with both an accountant and a lawyer, before planning or forming a corporate entity to recover judgments or debts.

What business name should you use? If you are mailing letters to judgment debtors after you own judgments, you cannot put anything related to debts or judgment collection on the envelope. I run a judgment-related company, however I do not put my business name on envelopes.

Some data service do not like to see the word judgment in business names. Collection is a better name to them. Also, there are still some directories that do not have judgment enforcement as a category, however collections almost always has a category.

The average person starting a judgment recovery business without having a name yet, you should consider picking a business name and domain name that hints of solutions or problem solving, instead of recovery or collections. Frank Smith could name his company "FS Services". Some people would rather do business with a company, even a DBA sole proprietor, than just a name doing business as a sole proprietor.

It is not your name, it is what you do with it. What counts is the work you put into marketing your name, and the quality work associated with it. Some smart people made a company called Google, and now when you think of the word "search", you think of Google.

Most businesses take a lot longer to generate a consistent profit, than the person who started the business ever imagined. This is especially true in most judgment enforcement businesses. On the web, a domain name with words such as judgment or enforcement may be a good idea. Even if your domain name is JudmgentsrUs.com, you can still do business as FS Enterprises, a DBA of Frank Smith.

How Should You Handle a "Difficult" New Bookkeeping Client?

Being a freelance bookkeeper isn't just about the numbers. It sure would be easier if that were the case. Then you could peacefully crunch number and get your work done in record time.

But being a freelance bookkeeper is mainly about building relationships with your clients. And especially in the beginning of these relationships, there's going to be a lot of what I call babysitting. You have to teach them how to treat you - what's acceptable behavior. In the process you're teaching them how you're going to work together.

But what do you do when it things get way out of hand?

In a recent Q & A call with members of my Bookkeeper's Club we talked about new clients that are difficult to work with. We talked about how to handle it when you're getting calls from 3 or 4 people within one company besides the one who hired you. And what if they're all giving you different stories, or maybe it's the same story told many different ways?

As with good physical health, there are also two ways of solving problems in a difficult client relationship when you're a freelance bookkeeper:

1. The best medicine is preventative.

Everyone knows if you have a lifelong pattern of healthful eating and exercise you can ward off many diseases. It's the same with bookkeeping problems. If you have written policies that address possible problems upfront, and you communicate these clearly to your client, you can prevent a lot of problems.

So the first thing you'll want to do is examine your own policy. Clearly define to yourself what you feel is acceptable. From the beginning you need to set office hours for answering calls and firmly stick to that policy. You need to put parameters around not only the times you answer calls but also from whom you'll receive calls.

Next, you need a clear way of communicating this policy to your clients. An excellent way to do this is to incorporate this policy into your handbook that you review with your prospective client. It's not enough to hand them your book. You should also verbally go over it with them.

2. Remedy the problem with the most effective, yet gentle, solution available.

You don't want to ignore the problem, hoping it will go away. More often than not it will just get worse. You also don't want to overreact and amputate that relationship if it can be saved and strengthened with the proper supports.

Maybe the problem started because you didn't have a clear policy of communication, or didn't firmly stick to it because of the emotions attached to the situation. If that's the case, acknowledge it and do what you can to fix it.

Go back to the one who hired you and say: "In order for us to have a good working relationship, it's really difficult for me to be fielding all of these phone calls. We need to have one point of contact. Do you feel comfortable meeting with everyone to share information once I hand you the results of my work?" Then I would recommend that you incorporate a weekly meeting into your service offerings.

Good communication is what will keep both you and your client from stressing out. Giving in and not sticking to your policies will only make the situation worse. It can be hard to stick to your guns, but it's vital in order to keep your client relationships healthy.

Creativity and Innovation Lacking in China

As someone who's been a victim of Chinese counterfeiters, I'm one person who wishes the Chinese were more creative and not just copycats. But it wasn't always like that. One of the most important innovations in history came from China. Ts'ai Lun, the inventor of paper is considered to be one the top ten most influential people in history. It's hard to even imagine a world without paper. Before paper, most books were made of bamboo, which made them quite heavy to carry around. There were a few books written on silk, but only the wealthy could afford them. Papyrus was used in the Western world, which was more advanced than China. But after the invention of paper China became one of the most civilizations on earth. This continued for seven or eight centuries. Other inventions, such as gunpowder and the compass pushed them even higher up the scale.

But these days creativity in China has been replaced by a rote system of learning. Chinese children are good at memorizing, reciting, and repetition, but not when it comes to using their imagination. The "gao kao" test hangs over the heads of all high school students like a cloud. It's a grueling, stressful test that high school students must take to get into college. But it's much more than that. It basically determines what path they will take in life, what college they get into, what kind of job they'll get, who they marry, and how much money they'll make. No pressure there, huh?

This is one reason Chinese students are programmed from an early age to memorize answers instead of working on problem solving and coming up with their own solution. Parents and teachers spoon feed them answers and they parrot them back. There is so much riding on this one test that there is no room at all for creativity.

But the Chinese do understand that in order to compete in a global economy they'll have to do more than just repeat lines. At the same time it's hard to convince people in a strict, formal educational system that play is just as valuable as study. In order to be creative you have to step outside your comfort zone and be willing to fail. That is a very hard pill to swallow when you've spent your whole young life avoiding it at all costs. Decades of doing things one way and doing it so strictly makes change uncomfortable. But China will eventually get to the point where they will either have to change or be left behind by innovation.

To qualify for spillovers, usually both your left and right organization must be balanced, obviously this won't happen if you are not recruiting anybody.

Will I actually make any money from Usana?

Well you can certainly make some money with this company, their small print says that the average established, full time associate makes around $85,000 per year, which is a handsome salary by anyone's standard. My experience in MLM has taught me that it's often more challenging to build a downline in a company that's been around for as long time. You should also bear in mind that the market is already heavily populated with many companies selling health and nutritional products.

However Usana have a solid history of success and respect within the industry. Its a safe bet that will be around for a long time.

Over time people become more immune to network marketing companies selling the latest nutritional solutions and using attraction marketing will be essential to success.

Such companies and distributors market very aggressively the latest pill or weight loss product. By learning to cut through the marketing noise and customer resistance you can have a lot of success with this company.

There are a number of reasons that companies would attempt mergers and acquisition proceedings, whether in a friendly fashion or by takeover. These reasons are always meant for the better of the company and sometimes are the only course for survival. Some companies may pursue mergers and acquisition processes to become more powerful in a particular market or just to make their presence known. Still others see benefits from teaming with a similar company that may have better technology, staff, talent, or products. Whatever the reason may be, mergers and acquisition activities are never easy. Some may move along more smoothly than others, but there is always one department that will intimately be involved with the integration process.

The Human Resources department is undoubtedly one of the most important departments in any company, though it is often the unsung hero. Of course, without sales and marketing, a company could never bring in the necessary revenue to survive. The Human Resources department, however, brings in the talent that makes the sales and completes the marketing tasks. HR also handles legal issues regarding the rights of the employees, and that keeps everyone happy and productive.

When faced with mergers and acquisition integration possibilities, the Human Resources department will have an uphill battle throughout. To begin with, each entity has HR departments that will have to be merged at some early point to avoid redundancy, or there will not be a unified company HR department. During the pre and post mergers and acquisition planning, the HR department is often responsible for determining the importance of every other job in the company. This year, human resource professionals should take the challenge to make some "Human Capital 2011 Resolutions":

• Reconnect with the highly paid professionals you downsized before you lose some of your best talent to your competitors.

• Build a virtual bench to pull from by networking.

In Q4 of 2009, employers took a random 20 percent slice out of their workforce. Many chose to axe the 20 percent with the highest salaries. Now there is a big candidate bucket -- a "garbage bucket" as viewed by many. But did you chop some of your best due to their high salary level? Maybe that bucket is not full of garbage but a mixture containing some very talented and formerly high-paid professionals you may need to reconnect with before someone else hires them.

You also need to become an employer of choice. Talk to employees so they believe their position is a position of choice. Strengthen corporate culture, and think in unconventional ways. What is top talent? They can do more with less, produce more, jump higher than their peers, and are the engine of your company. They are your greatest asset, so treat them that way.

In addition, rethink your purpose for attending networking events. Most people attend networking events just to network themselves. However, it is important to shift that perspective and begin networking in order to build a virtual bench and to constantly keep your eye out for the A-players you would like to someday join your team. Once superstars are identified, go to LinkedIn to see their social networks, find out their interests, etc., and also create several avenues to reach out to them monthly: send them industry info, your blog link, daily quotes, etc. Then, take them out to lunch, coffee or for a glass of wine once a month/quarter. When you're ready to hire, go to your virtual bench and have at it!

After every down year, every group of C-suite folks puts on rose-colored glasses. You must put on a leadership, strategic hat and give full commitment to change. If people are your best asset, how do you create an environment to attract and keep the best people? The more you empower your people, the more they will produce and manage themselves. Is Your Work-Life Balance Threatening Your Productivity?

Many people, especially women, set up their own businesses when they have young children, as a way of getting off the corporate treadmill, and being home for bath and bedtime. Running your own business can transform your life - and it can also become a monster. When people start their business, they are often in honeymoon mode - they are happy to spend all day, every day with it, nurturing it and lavishing attention and resources on to it.

That can't last forever though, and if you try, it's the route to burnout and exhaustion. The key is to set some clear boundaries between work and home time. Here are my top tips - some passed on from my clients, others the product of my own blood, sweat and tears as I struggled with this issue myself.

Keep the computer in another room.

You will find it easier to switch off if the computer isn't sitting switched on in the living room or kitchen, where it will tempt you to check it all the time. If you use the same computer for work and business, then create a business user ID, which you close down at the end of the working day.

Limit the amount of time you spend on social media

Only open your email client and social media up a few times a day, and then shut them down again. They may be a key part of your marketing plan, but unless you are disciplined, work time will trickle away, and you will end up having to work 'overtime' to catch up.

Automate and systematise as much as possible

It may take a couple of hours to set up an autoresponder sequence in your email management system, but then you can forget it. Set up stay-in-touch systems with clients and prospects, and use tools to bulk schedule your social media.

Have working hours and as far as possible stick to them.

Yes, your working hours may be in the evening when the kids are in bed, in which case don't get drawn into work in the afternoons.We've probably all done the 'just let mummy finish this email' line to our kids - while occasionally its essential, if it's a pattern then we end up short changing ourselves, our business, and our families, as nothing ever gets total focus.

Learn to delegate.

It's not an extravagance, it's essential. Think about how much your hourly rate is when you bring in new business and service your clients and customers. Does it make sense to be paying yourself that rate to be doing your own admin, or your own cleaning? Focus on spending your time doing the things in your business that only you can do.

Spend time doing non-work things with people who aren't involved in your business.

You don't have to spend every minute of the day developing yourself. Sometimes you can just have fun!

Thriving During the Effects of the National Debt

The national debt encompasses every level of government borrowing and spending and currently is at approximately $14 trillion; it is the largest debt in the world and is so huge and so out of control that it can never be paid off. The national debt is literally the biggest threat to the security of the United States of America as well as the rest of the civilized world. It is a very real danger to entire world, it effects every decision of our leaders, investors and citizens; knowingly or unknowingly. The national debt will continue to cause the US Dollar to weaken which will in turn cause the US government to raise interest rates which have been held extremely low for a considerable period of time and cannot go any lower.

Surprisingly the government recently actually agreed to lower the national debt by roughly $ 1 trillion, but also raised the debt ceiling (the amount they can borrow) at the same time. So much for setting a positive example for the world.

Unemployment rate -- The number of unemployed workers expressed as a percentage of the labor force. Unemployment is one of the most devastating things that can happen to you in American society. High unemployment means employers aren't under much pressure to pay their workers more, in most cases employers will demand longer work hours for less pay. Unemployment and underemployment continue to cause hardships for millions of families and weigh heavily on the confidence of the nation. The combination of the high unemployment and high interest rates will be tragic for a great many people. Instead of having to pay the interest obligations on our national debt we could be using the money much more productively such as creating millions of jobs through infrastructure design and construction.

Inflation rate refers to a general rise in prices measured against a standard level of purchasing power. Inflation is often described as the creation of new money and has a significant effect on investment returns, decisions and monetary policy. Inflation by its very nature creates a debt-based economy, destroys savings, and makes retirement next-to-impossible. As inflation rises, every dollar will buy a smaller percentage of a goods and services. Inflation is currently about 10% and the actual unemployment rate is roughly 20% not the official 2-3% and 9-10% respectively, as officially reported.

The national debt is also a driving force behind the raising of the interest rate.

I'm writing this article 2 days after Hurricane Irene came through. I have no power or phone service. I charged my cell phone in the car. I will be heading to the library shortly to charge my laptop and use their Internet access.

We were lucky when it came to Irene. We knew the hurricane was coming and had time to plan and prepare. We knew there was a good possibility that we would lose power and maybe even water. We took preventive measures and charged our cell phones and laptops. We made sure we had flashlights and batteries and knew where they were. We filled bottles with water and put away anything outside that could possibly "take flight".

The storm came and did a lot of damage here in NJ but my house was spared. In the big scheme of things, losing power was just an inconvenience especially since we were prepared.

Fortunately hurricanes don't happen very often (at least not in New Jersey) and when they do we have plenty of warning. In our businesses we're not always that lucky. Emergencies tend to crop up all the time.

Some emergencies are good news. For instance, you are asked to fill in at the last minute on a radio show. It's very exciting but you have only a short time to pull everything together. Or you bring on a new client and find yourself scrambling to get all of the material together so you can get started.

Other times, the emergency is bad news...your ezine is due out tomorrow and you still haven't gotten the article written. Or you find yourself up against a deadline on a project you are working on.

Running your business from emergency to emergency is exhausting. But I have to ask you...if these types of things are happening again and again are they really emergencies or are they situations that, while they might not occur every day, you have had warning about and should have prepared yourself for?

Here are three areas you can look at to help you prepare so that you and your clients are covered and your business and life will run smoother.

1. Think about your day-to-day schedule. What types of "emergencies" often strike? Sure the specific situation might be unexpected, but I bet there are a lot of similarities between these events. Pay specific attention to when you find yourself saying "UGH! Why does this keep happening?" What can you do to prepare? What tools can you put at your disposal so that your business keeps going?

2. Look at the things you do often. What can you automate or create a system for so that these situations become barely a ripple. Create a "welcome package" for new clients so that sending them information is easy. Create a package of material on the various presentation topics you do so that you can quickly give it to anyone who needs it.

3. What type of true emergency systems can you put in place? If you were called away from your business suddenly do you have support that can cover for you and help you reschedule appointments? Can you automate various communications with prospects and clients? What if you lost power or your computer's hard drive (I've lost 3) or lost your cell phone? Is your computer backed up and do you back it up regularly? Do you charge your phone regularly? Would you have your important phone numbers available?

The bottom line is that there will certainly be true emergencies that force you to stop everything you are doing and focus your attention elsewhere, and you'll never be able to avoid them all. The key is to do as much as you can to minimize the interruption that they cause.

Although men's fashion styles come and go, there is one thing that has held true for many years and probably will continue to for many to come: when attending a job interview, you should wear a suit. Sometimes people ask, "is it okay to combine a suit jacket with different pants?" In my opinion, no, it is not. Your best bet for a job interview is to wear a two-piece suit. Simply put, the two-piece suit creates the positive first impression you want to make by helping you to appear polished, professional, and put together.

Why not three button or four button? Three button may be seen as a little too formal, whereas four button may be viewed as too trendy (it's all in the details). However, depending on the job for which you are interviewing, you may want to appear just a little bit trendy. This may apply in arts-related fields, such as if you are interviewing for a cutting edge graphics design firm. Go with your gut, but at the same time, if you are uncertain, it is best to waiver on the side of conservatism. You want the interviewer to be focused on what you are saying, not distracted by what you are wearing.

When selecting an interview suit, charcoal gray and navy are good colors from which to choose. Earth tones and light colors are generally regarded as too informal, so while there are lots of nice olive gray and brown suits out there, you may want to avoid them for your interview. While black was once seen as very formal, it is now commonly worn by men for many occasions. So if you feel your best in black, you can go for it. Navy or dark blue suits are generally regarded as a favorite to wear to an interview.

Solid color shirts and suits are best for an interview. If you want to wear a suit with a pattern, keep it subtle. A small pinstripe or light plaid pattern is acceptable, as long as it is light, and the suit appears solid colored from across the room.

If you are buying a suit off the rack or getting it altered before your interview, make sure that it fits properly. You'll want proper range of movement in the shoulders in order to allow you to shake hands, and potentially remove items from a portfolio. The suit jacket should fit so that it can be easily buttoned without creating tug marks across the fabric. The suit jacket cuffs should fit so that you have just about of an inch of your shirt sleeves showing when your arms are relaxed at your sides. When you sit down, you will need the bottom of your pants to reveal only a glimpse of your socks, not any bare leg.

Now, it's best to remember that few men can wear suits right off the rack. So don't plan to shop the day before the interview and expect to find a suit that fits you like a glove. Allow time for your suit to be tailored so that it fits you perfectly. This is definitely worth the investment-- both in terms of time and money.

We all know that job interviews can be a bit unnerving, so this is another reason to not wait until the last minute to select your suit. The morning before your interview, lay out all the pieces of your interview outfit: suit, shirt, tie, belt, socks and shoes. If your suit is new, make sure that you have removed all tell-tale signs, such as tags and extra buttons. All you do is for the people you care about and you want only the best for them. You love the life god gives you and you want to take full advantage from this great gift. You want to succeed, you have a lot of energy, you love challenges and you want to win and all you want to do is creating a better life for you and the people who trust and follow you.

Now think about this: At this point of your life, not yesterday or tomorrow, right now, if you were someone else, would you to join you on any kind of business? If the answer is NO then we have some work to do. But don't give up because only knowing that you can do it, only trusting in yourself and only taking seriously action will make you reach 90% of the goal of becoming a leader.

Live your life at best, do everything you think is right and never give up, believe in yourself. Surround yourself only with optimistic people who trust you and build a small empire with them. Help people as much as you can without losing your posture, you help them because you love them not because you follow them. One way to describe a brand is first to identify what it is not. A brand is not a logo. Throughout history craftsmen, noblemen, and tradesmen used a form of branding with unique shapes and letterforms in order to identify their work, property or position.

These symbols have been used throughout history to not only identify "who owns this," but also "who made this," and for persons of significance, "who is this."

Today, brand doesn't merely describe the symbols or icons that label. In business, a brand is not the surface perception the seller presents to the buyer, but the internal perception the buyer has of that seller.

Surface perception: a symbol or wordmark with the intent to identify and distinguish-a logo.

Internal perception: the emotional and rational connection buyers have with a product or service-a brand.

A brand resides in the hearts and minds of those familiar with it. It's the visceral reaction that occurs within people when they look at, hear of, or experience that company's goods or services. How to Create the Perfect Business Card

Take a while to think about what your business card says about you. After yourself, this will be the first impression of your company to many people you meet. If it's badly produced and amateurish then people will assume the same about your business, but it's easy to make your business card work better for you.

Here are The Design Mechanics top 10 tips for creating the perfect business card:

1. Say what you do!

Let's start with the obvious. So many business cards simply don't state what a company does. If you have a non-descriptive company name such as "A & J Associates" then make sure your company card actually tells people what you do.

People retain business cards for a long time and will forget your name and company name soon after meeting you. Therefore your card needs to remind them you are the people who print company logos on USB sticks.

2. Don't lose sight of what your card is for

Remember that the main reason for a business card is for people to get your contact details. As such make sure that your phone number, email address and website are all clearly legible. Make sure that phone numbers especially are in easy to read fonts. Many creative typefaces have poor numerals meaning numbers such as 1 and 7 can be mixed up.

If you have a long website address, then make it more legible by using different weights to break up the words, eg: www.mywebsiteaddressislongerthanyourwebsiteaddress.com

Also consider a QR code, where people can scan your card with a mobile phone and it gives them all your contact details in a digital format.

3. Don't use a non-business email address

Business email addresses are cheap to set up. Make sure the first thing you do is buy a domain name and hosting facility so that you can operate from a commercial email address from day one - nothing says you have only just set up or that you might not be here tomorrow than displaying a Hotmail, Gmail, BT Internet etc email address on your business card.

4. Don't print your cards yourself

No matter how tight your budget, don't be tempted to home-produce your company cards. Even if you have a colour-printer that can print on card, once they are in a card holder with your competitors' cards you will regret trying to save money on them.

Home-produced cards just don't wear well. The ink isn't fixed (so it will fade, or even worse run!) and the card will become tatty very quickly. The cost of commercial printing has really come down over the past few years, and with digital printing you can get anywhere from a couple of hundred to several thousand cards printed at really affordable cost, usually in a couple of days.

5. Get new cards if your details change

The last thing you want to do is apologise when you hand your company card over. If your details change, don't scribble them out and write your new number on just because you have a box of them left. Put them in the recycle bin and get some more. Do you want people to think you are doing so badly in business that you can't afford to buy new cards? If your details are likely to change, just buy a couple of hundred at a time.

6. Resist "free" card offers

We've all seen the adverts for free business cards from Internet-based printers. These offers seem too good to be true, and often they are.

Although the business cards are free (plus postage), they are not be printed on premium card stock and also have an advert on the back from the printing company who provided them - why would you promote someone else's company at no benefit to yourself, and why scream out that you are just starting up or not successful enough to be able to afford to buy business cards for your company?

Some companies also offer pre-templated designs for you to choose from. These can seem like a good idea until you turn up at a networking event and meet the 5 other people who chose the same design as you...!

7. Keep your business card "on-brand"

Your business card should carry the same visual look and feel as the rest of your marketing material. Make sure that if you lay out all your corporate material together it looks like it all belongs to the same company.

If you already have a "brand" in place, make sure that your designer is aware of what your other literature looks like and what your consistent marketing messages are. When someone visits your website after viewing your business card they should see the same logo, colours and visual elements. This is called "visual synergy", and the repetition will help clients remember your brand.

8. Make your card much more than a business card

Think about making your business card into a flyer for your company. Consider a fold-out card to show a portfolio or list client testimonials, or use a stand-up (tent) business card that can be some kind of quick-reference guide.

If you take appointments, make sure you use your business card as an appointment card, or use the back of your card to give instant written quotes or provide receipts.

9. Include a photo if people are buying "you"

If you are a consultant or in a business where people will be buying "you" rather than a product, then put your photo on your business card. Don't just take a photo on your phone; find a local photographer who will do a head-shot at a reasonable set price.

Think about how you want to present yourself, do you need to be in a shirt and tie with a plain studio backdrop, or do you want to portray a more casual appearance by having your portrait taken in a park for example?

10. Never accept a business card from someone without giving them yours in return!

Finally, never let anyone give you their business card without taking one of yours. A good way to give someone one of your business cards is to ask for one of theirs and make sure your hand extends at the same time with yours.

It would be a very rude person who wouldn't accept your card whilst expecting you to take theirs!

If you are a business owner and could prove to yourself that the right logo would increase sales, would you make your logo a high priority?

To help keep things clear, let's define some terms. Brand is a big buzz word, and it's important. It's also important to know that your brand isn't your logo.

The brand is what people think and feel about your business, product, or services based on what they see, hear, and experience. The logo is a slice of the brand experience. But it is a very important slice... like your first piece of hot pizza!

Your logo is the face of your business. It's how people recognize you and your business or product. The logo identifies: it's the face of a business or product.

Imagine networking in a room with 200 people, and you glance over and see someone you know walk in the door. You know instantly who that person is. How? You have identified them by their face. Things you know and feel about that person come flooding into your mind and emotions in a moment without saying a word. That is the brand experience.

What if a person doesn't know anything about your business except for the logo they see on a business card, a sign, or brochure?

Here is something every business owner should take note of: The importance of a face.

Psychological Science published an article in July 2006, summarized by Eric Wargo, with the results of research by two Princeton psychologists Willis and Todorov. In a series of experiments, they showed respondents photographs of strangers and asked them to measure specific character qualities, such as competence, attractiveness, trustworthiness and aggressiveness. Two qualities that people felt the strongest about was attractiveness and trustworthiness. So, without any information, except for the person's face, respondents strongly judged whether a person could be trusted.

Q: How long do you think it took them to look at a photograph of a stranger and come to that conclusion?

A: One-tenth of a second. In the blink of an eye!

Furthermore, the longer the respondents were able to look, the more solidified they became in their opinion! Their first impression remained the same and even grew more resolute.

Now, we don't like to think of ourselves as judgmental, but we must face the music: we are a judgmental species and we DO judge a book by its cover. (So, when you write a book, make sure you have a good designer because the right cover will drive sales!)

People will judge a stranger's trustworthiness without any facts, just their face-in 1/10th of a SECOND! One of the fundamental factors in business is trust.

We often hear the phrase that Bob Burg turns in his book, Endless Referrals, "People do business with people they know, like, and trust."

Marty Neumeier, in his book, The Brand Gap, says that "Trust is the ultimate shortcut to a buying decision, and the bedrock of modern branding."

What does trust have to do with your logo? Since the logo is the identity, the face, of your business, people are making judgments about the quality and trustworthiness of your business.

I have heard business owners declare that it's only price and service which matters and that a logo is just "fluff." If that's true, then why do the big guys spend the big bucks to get it right?

If your logo is out-dated or amateurish, you risk communicating that you are a novice or that you are not progressive or a leader in your industry. Your customers have to "get past," even on a subconscious level, that message in order to do business with you. Or, they may be going past you to your competitor who looks more competent, professional, reliable - someone they can trust.

Getting back to the phrase, "People do business with people they know, like, and trust," If a logo communicates trust, can it also help your prospects and customers know and like you? Sure!

Can your logo help people feel comfortable, like they know you? People will relate to a feeling and personality and feel like they know your business. Will your target market relate to your product or service if you look more relaxed & approachable, or strong and loyal, masculine or feminine? The right logo (identity) will communicate the right brand message and credibility that will give people the right impression and confidence to buy from you.

Attractiveness was the second strongest feeling that was measured in the Princeton study. We like what we find attractive. A logo that is busy rather than sophisticated, dull rather than dynamic, or common rather than memorable will not be as attractive and "liked."

If a prospect knows little about your business, and their first impression is your logo on a business card, stationery, vehicle, trade show display, sign or brochure, they will likely make the same judgment as the people in the study...in the blink of an eye.

It takes years to build a solid brand and a lot of work to keep it. Your logo can help build a solid brand, or work against it. Like a well-dressed and personable salesperson-- who never sleeps--it can get you in the door and give you the advantage.

Build Your Brand Up in a Down Economy

When a depressed economy impacts your business and your brand, it's easy to panic and be reactive. But a down economy can actually present opportunities to build your brand up. Here are three strategies you can take advantage of now:

1. Deal from a position of strength, not weakness.

A natural reaction to sluggish sales is to cut your expenses any way you can. But reducing expenses that can impact the strength of your brand can have a long term negative effect. For example, suppose you cut back on your customer support hours, or reduce your customer support staff. This may result in cost savings, but it could also lead to customer dissatisfaction and even losing customers because they can't get questions answered or problems resolved in a timely manner. When you need to cut expenses, start with budget line items that are not customer-critical.

Remember that customers keep you in business, during good times and bad. You need to work to do things to maintain customer loyalty, especially in a down economy. To keep your brand image strong, invest in the things that keep your customers coming to you instead of going to your competitors.

2. Invest in your brand by taking advantage of market-driven deals.

This is not the time to slash spending on your marketing activities; in fact, history has shown that brands that invest in marketing during recessions come out stronger in the end.

There is a hidden advantage in a down economy for brand marketers. Soft business conditions impact the media, too, and that means great advertising deals are available. Media outlets such as publications, radio and televisions stations, and websites may be willing to deeply discount their ad rates and throw in extra incentives for advertisers who commit to a multiple insertion contract. Print publications with websites will often discount ad space for a combination buy.

Go after the media outlets that target your specific audience and don't be afraid to bargain. Ad space is negotiable. Similarly, explore the possibility of getting discounts and incentives from any other marketing suppliers.

3. Reach out and help someone.

Everybody feels the pain in a down economy, but no one more than those on the bottom rungs of the economic ladder. This could be the time for your brand to do good by making a donation of time, product, or money to a good cause that helps the less fortunate. You can make a contribution directly or indirectly, via a program in which you pledge to donate a portion of the income you receive from customers.

Why would you make a charitable contribution now? Sure, it is the right thing to do -- but just as important, it is a very effective public relations strategy. When you make a donation, you can talk about it prominently and it has residual and lasting benefits. Donating to a food bank or helping an organization that feeds hungry kids is a way to show your brand has a heart. Aligning yourself with a good cause can have a significant "halo effect" on your brand.

Today, very few company, product, or service ideas are truly new and unique. You can almost be guaranteed that someone, somewhere, has developed a product or service similar to yours. A prospect who has to choose between two competing brands that are essentially the same will likely choose the brand that is also doing a little good for the world.

Corporate Branding - What Is a Logo?

Thinking in computer terms, a logo is actually just an icon, or a graphic representation of an object, concept, or message. Sound simple enough? Maybe. But if you've ever been on the creative end of designing one, you know that there's nothing simple about it.

It's interesting that logos have only been widely used for about 100 years. Originally, local merchants would sign their goods so that consumers would be able to differentiate between brands. The signatures served as early forms of trademarks. As the number of merchants increased, more formal logos were developed to lend an identity or personality to various products to make them stand out among the others.

With the number of companies springing up today, computer designers are frequently being asked to create interesting and unique logos that will stand out among the competition.

But how do you create an identity for a company that is just starting out? There's no history to fall back on, no personality, and no corporate culture. It's easy to become emotionally attached to an idea, but another to lose sight of the company's goals in the marketplace. The logo design process can take months to finalize and many times ends in frustration.

The Nike Swoosh, McDonald's Arches, and the Apple logo are sure winners in brand identification. But only because we've seen them thousands of times on billboards, commercials, print ads, and t-shirts. In the first decade after each company began, they were still struggling for identity among their peers. It takes time for a corporate identity to take shape and even longer for its graphical representation to mean something to its customers.

Some of the simplest logos are the most memorable. Maybe because the companies that have been around the longest designed their logos during simpler times. Or maybe because they were just simple companies back then.

There's nothing wrong with simplicity. Bass Ale's logo is an understated red triangle. And Microsoft is simply Microsoft. But the mere sight of it brings to mind images of Bill Gates. Not many logos are so identifiable that it makes people think about the company's founder. Except for maybe Apple.

If you desire a more intricate design, by all means, go for it. As long as it's somewhat unique and visually represents who you are or what you do, you'll make out okay. But don't sweat it if you only use a font treatment for your name. Some of the biggest and most notable companies in the world simply use their name as their logo.

Because in the long run, it's your products or services that will ultimately make or break your brand in the marketplace. Not many people choose one company over another to do business with because of their logo. If you're good at what you do, your customers will remember it. Your logo will just make it easier for them to find you when they want to buy more.

The Rise and Fall of Loyds Retailers

What goes around comes around...

Charting the rise and fall of electronic stores group Loyds is to uncover a retail enigma on a complex scale. Based in the North West of England the original Loyds Retailers was a subsidiary of Ada Halifax owned by Philips.

Ada (Associated Domestic Alliances) was used by Philips as a holding company and in the 1960s a clutch of retail and rental stores throughout the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland joined Loyds as subsidiaries of Ada Halifax.

This amalgamated chain of around 300 outlets (mainly independents) had been owned or part owned by Ekco, Pye or other companies in the Pye/Ekco group.

When Philips took over the Pye/Ekco consortium they added additional concerns that had previously been acquired, fully or in part, by Philips or other companies in their ownership (with the exception of 100 stores in the midlands trading as Alex Owen and Collis respectively).

As a substantial proportion of these organisations remained in part ownership, the operators were able to exercise considerable autonomy and stock whatever branded merchandise they preferred.

Clearly this presented a cumbersome, convoluted, and wasteful retail scenario and Philips decreed that major rationalisation was required.

They kicked off reorganisation for increased efficiency and profitability by buying outright those stores still in part ownership.

Next for deliberation was the development and implementation of a plan for overall rationalisation to comprise these core objectives:

1. Standard trading name
2. Standard marketing programme
3. Standard purchasing policy
4. Standard pricing policy
5. Standard distribution policy

It was around this time that I became heavily engaged in the second of these core objectives: marketing... From being the advertising agent for just one of the subsidiaries I found myself pitch forked into the maelstrom of activities leading up to the re-branding launch, with personal responsibility for the publicity and merchandising requirements of all existing outlets.

During the pre-launch phase, centrally controlled standard policies for marketing, purchasing, pricing and distribution were gently eased in while the subsidiaries still traded under their original names.

After due consideration the standard trading name was agreed as Loyds.

The change was effected almost seamlessly overnight one Friday in August 1970 and champagne corks popped in area offices throughout the UK as sales rocketed during the weeks to follow.

The euphoria was short lived though...

A few short months later sales dipped back to pre-launch levels.

Worse still and contrary to the diktat of the rationalisation master plan, expenses soared out of control. In mid 1971 Philips belatedly activated a damage limitation exercise and restructured the senior management of Loyds.

Acknowledged company doctor Len Govier was recruited from Granada and appointed Chief Executive.

Len rapidly steadied the ship by dramatically reducing overall operational costs, and once the dust had settled, embarked on restoring the programme of expansion, bringing Alex Owen and Collis into the fold.

Their aggregated 100 stores were re-branded in the autumn of 1972 as Loyds...

Len Govier's final act was to take Philips retail division into the burgeoning out-of-town hyper mart bazaar and he accomplished this by putting one of the old trademarks to work again: this time Eclipse.

He opened the first of these outlets in Halesowen in 1972.

Despite quantifiable progress, cracks were starting to show in the relationship between Len Govier and the meddling mandarins at Philips UK headquarters in Century House London.

In March 1973 Len parted company with Philips to set up his own TV rental company.

Later that year and in a desperate attempt to pump fresh life into the ailing high street retail chain, around 50 outlets which still under-performed were restructured and re-branded as Loyds Rentals.

Once again the management was reorganised and the group tottered along for a time but it became increasingly apparent that Philips had become disenchanted with their retail division.

In 1975 parcels of stores were sold off to Currys and a programme of closure instigated for the remainder.

Eclipse though continued to prosper and expand until 1976 when Philips finally lost patience, threw in the towel, and hived off the outlets in Halesowen, Glasgow, Manchester, Bristol, Cardiff and elsewhere. The buyer was Comet.

Could Philips have made a success of Loyds had they persisted?

I doubt it.

Retailing and Philips were uncomfortable bedfellows from the outset...

I was an active participant in all of these initiatives and while Loyds was a disaster for Philips, it proved a godsend for me, transforming my fledgling ad agency into a major player. It was purchased outright by Saatchi & Saatchi in 1974 and re-branded Saatchi Green.

You should actually consider this a good thing, because it means that they really want you to address the problem. Rather than making bad reviews or complaining in other media, they are posting their concerns in your social media accounts so that you can respond to it. Think of it this way - a customer that complains is a gift. Without social media, the complaint may be routed in more harmful ways, and could result in crippling your brand.

That's what great about social media - it's incredibly viral and fast. This is also what's bad about social media. This is the reason why it's essential for brands to make sure to monitor their social media accounts well so that they can easily respond to any concerns or problems.

You should look at it this way - social media is an excellent channel for communicating with your audience. Nowadays, it's not enough for you to communicate with people via advertisements or marketing campaigns. You have to deal with people personally to build your brand. People want to interact with you - they want to know who they're conversing with.
This is why you can't tell your customers or clients to do it the right way and use the proper channels. You should be happy that they're airing out their concerns in channels that you have access to, rather than outside channels that you cannot address.

In building your brand, you always have to deal with people, and you should make sure to treat them with respect. What follows are five steps to building a brand asset management system online.

1. Make everything match your name and/or that of your company. If you wanted to find Ford online, wouldn't the first thing you tried be http://www.ford.com? There's a good reason. It's logical. Chances are good that your customers and clients will try to do the same thing when they try to find you.

2. Promote your brand offline. Regardless of the means you use to promote yourself and your business, include your web address.

3. Use good SEO. More online consumers find what they're looking for via a web search than any other means. But with 2.5 billion current web pages, and more than seven million being used every day, searching has become a matter of wading through thousands of results. SEO is a tool that is used to optimize your chances of being among the top results that a search engine finds and presents to users.

4. Use good PR. Let the print and online publications in your field know about your site. Trade periodicals often publish reviews of good sites by professionals in their field of coverage. Further, every other site you use such as Facebook should also refer to your main website.

5. Online directories. You can often submit your site to directories for free, or there might be a nominal fee. But it's worth it. Also, here's a stunning fact: in searches for some of the main professional services, many of the top search results aren't individual websites, but directories.

The most important thing to remember when promoting your brand and bringing about managing that brand is to make your brand reflect your personal brand the same way all of your documentation does. After all, when your business reflects a professional appearance, you will too, and the public will respond in like manner to it.
